So excited to finally release giant shoulder! Since we’ve just launched, the whole Moving Pieces team feels pretty self-reflecting (a little terrified and excited alike!). I am particularly proud of its stylized visual graphics. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you about our inspiration behind the look of the game.
It’s amazing to see how far photo-realistic graphics can be pushed on the latest Xbox hardware, but what really got us excited was the latest graphics technologies like physically-based rendering and Cell What I did was create a mix of more stylized shading approaches such as shading. This was the foundation behind our technical and aesthetic approach to visuals. giant shoulder.
We started by experimenting with what this would look like by using early concept art to create a basic world without gameplay. Initially, I went further with the traditional cel-shading look, but found that when I combined this with some photorealistic rendering techniques, the fine details really started to shine.
As for the setting, we knew we wanted the game to take place in a sci-fi world, which meant having a cosmic skybox full of planets, stars, and swirling clouds. We were heavily influenced by his 1970s style of sci-fi art, and we liked that the background often included giant planets to keep the horizon interesting.
The basic story of the game is that the dark forces of entropy have taken over the universe, and it is the player’s job to restore life and balance. His one of the game’s primary NPCs is an almighty owl from the Ancient Order, and many of the levels and props found throughout the game are inspired by ancient civilizations such as Ancient Egypt and Greece.
I imagined a level with abandoned ruins from the Ancient Order scattered throughout the level for players to explore. This was the main inspiration behind the level’s look and layout.
Some of the game’s props and levels are inspired by surrealist paintings, especially in the game’s final act.
Take advantage of the stylish look and emphasize the use of color to tell a story. giant shoulderOne of the biggest themes of this game is darkness and light.
Players start every level in a world shrouded in darkness, restoring it to life and light as they progress and finally beat a level.
It was easy to make the “brighter” versions of our landscapes pop with color, but it wasn’t easy to make the cold, dark versions of these alien worlds sing with color. I spent days pouring it into my palette, but finally decided I needed to re-evaluate what I meant by “dark.” We have decided to lean into darkness as a concept of coldness, or lack of life.
In the end, I found a combination of colors and lighting that seemed vibrant and eye-catching, yet still represented the theme. I created a world of sandy deserts, white snowfields, and green glowing caustic acid.
We can’t wait for players to dive into the world we created!
