Much like The Fast and the Furious, DC’s Blue Beetle will be about family. Director Angel Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña appeared on a panel at CinemaCon to promote the film and promote the superhero suits.
Soto and Maridueña, who play the eponymous superhero Jaime Reyes, said the suit is basically a young nerd’s fantasy. “Anything you can imagine, I can create,” says Reyes.
Meanwhile, Soto wanted to instill how important family is to this DC movie, the first to feature a Latino hero. For example, he mentioned how the Reyes family is there when the Scarab chooses Jaime and gives him superpowers. But through his family, he finds strength as a hero.
The director also promised there would be a heroic arc throughout the film for the Reyes family, with George Lopez playing Jaime’s uncle and Adriana Barraza playing Jaime’s grandmother. Damian Alcazar and Elpidia Carrillo play Jamie’s father and mother respectively. The DC movie also stars Susan Sarandon and Raul Trujillo.
Also at CinemaCon, we got a better look at The Flash. The new trailer for the DC movie is full of Batman and Supergirl action. There’s also new footage of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, featuring “really good bromances.”
Blue Beetle is set to premiere in theaters on August 18th.
