Hi, I’m Catalin Marcu from GrimTalin. Last days of Lazarus – A dark post-communist adventure that tells a disturbing tale of family, loss and sin. Darkania Works game directors George and I are extremely excited that our game is finally coming to Xbox Series X.
I have been involved in the development of this game for about a year now, and I am very impressed with the setting of this game, not only in our country, Romania, but in a difficult time for us, the post-communist transition period. It resonated immediately. I feel I’ve accomplished my goal of highlighting what our lives were like during those difficult times as we ourselves grew from children to teenagers through a distorted lens of the supernatural.
I was four and a half years old when communism collapsed in Romania. The small town I grew up in didn’t have much anxiety, but the big city and our capital, Bucharest, were a complete revolution. Told. They are shooting in Bucharest. I don’t know how much I understood the gravity of what happened when I was young, but my father’s worried face told me it was important, and those words stuck in my mind. .
After that it was a transitional period. The sacrificial generation they called it. Our parents were to dedicate themselves to poverty and constant struggle for my generation to have a real chance of living a democratic life. Very inspiring! What it really meant was that the right people with the right connections got a free pass to loot almost everything from the country. It meant a generation still blocked, clinging to old ways of thinking and survival.
Communism did not disappear from our country overnight. Neither was all the cultural and commercial Russian influence. We still imported a lot from all the countries of the former communist bloc. This is the main reason why there are so many items in the game that look like they are made in Russia. That’s why there are Russian texts here and there. Some people may mistakenly believe that the game is set in Russia, or that they have accidentally placed these items in the game. In fact, that’s what life was like for us in Romania at the time.
During communism, one of the ways people coped was through religion, which remained a defining feature for us well into the transition. Our Orthodox Christianity has always merged with many traditions, many of which have a pagan character. We are religious, but we also believe in ghosts, curses, disillusionment, and fortune-tellers. I wanted to explain my view of Christianity as best I could in the game.
Our country has always been admired for its beautiful scenery. Eerily beautiful locations inspired by real places and architecture, such as the Abbey and Bran Orphanage, blend into lush forests.
Personally, I am very happy to be given the opportunity to work on a game that puts the spotlight on our country, its traditions and its difficult past. I hope you will find out all the details. And of course, help our honored Lazarus find the truth about his family’s troubled past and the fate of all its members. Last days of Lazarus is coming to Xbox Series X|S!
