I’m a big fan of breakout style games. You know, hit a little ball with your paddle and break blocks? they are good One of the first games I remember of him was Super Break He’s Out on the Gameboy.
Developer Connor Aitken, a fairly new game design graduate with a strangely clever idea, has created a prototype for all of us to enjoy. KBRD. (opens in new tab) The basic idea is to have a small pixel ball, but instead of a paddle, use any combination of two keyboard keys to create a paddle. So you can stretch between Q and P for a big paddle bounce, or use P and Z, or W and C, etc. to roughly change direction and get the perfect angle into the block. I can do it. New blocks pop up over time, as do small yellow bonus balls.
A prototype of a fun idea I had. Similar to Breakout, but using keyboard keys to create paddles! #gamedev #madewithunity #indiedev #unity2d #screenshotsaturday pic.twitter.com/FhyS3J3anEAugust 6, 2022
KBRD is still a prototype, but free to play. It’s by no means a complete game, just a prototype, but the appeal of the concept is clear. Games that rely on the unique affordances of input devices are interesting, at least to me. Twitter already has a lot of ideas on how to improve, develop and give the concept a unique twist. For example, a cooldown for using letters quickly, a way to force you to use all letters before using them again, and so on. Cooldowns, special items – you get drift.
discoverable KBRD on itch.io, Where you can play it in your browser. More info from developer Connor Aitken itchi aio When on Twitter. I like this idea and want to make more similar ones, so please encourage him to keep making games.
