Announcing Counter-Strike 2 (opens in new tab) Earlier this week marked the beginning of a whole new era for what is arguably the most famous shooter in video game history. It also marks the end of an era, as Valve announced today that the upcoming Paris Major 2023 will be the last major championship event played in that version of the game.
Majors are semi-annual CS:GO championship events held in regions around the world with big prize pools. Previous Championship Event, Rio Major 2022 (opens in new tab)has a prize pool of $1.25 million, with the Paris Major offering the same amount. Like the game itself, Majors is extremely popular despite its age. It has been running since 2013, still sells out major arenas, and is broadcast in multiple languages around the world.
However, Valve has finally decided it’s time to move on from CS:GO, so they’re wasting no time moving forward. “The Paris Major will be the last CS:GO Major,” he tweeted. “His next major will take place in March 2024 and will be held for the first time in Counter-Strike 2.”
That’s a year from now, and naturally, that should be plenty of time to squash bugs and polish the rough edges of the next sequel. From the perspective of an audience that isn’t watching and competing for a ton of money, it might be fun too.
