We can forgive DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos for being a little wary, since absolutely nothing has been said about the game prior to its release. But this cute take on DC’s superhero is actually pretty good. .
Play as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman throughout the game, and switch between the three heroes at any time. In combat, this allows you to string together fun combos and unleash powerful special attacks each set to a short cooldown. It’s basically a simple action RPG, but the combat is punchy and satisfying.
Spend time traversing the colorful town of Happy Harbor in between encounters with aggressive fish people, monsters summoned by the mischievous Mr. Mxyzptlk. Basically, it’s a small open-world setting with optional dungeons, quests, and NPCs. The size of the map feels just right for his ten-hour-long campaign, and each hero has his own fast travel method, like Superman’s ability to fly, or Wonder Woman’s whip through the streets. You can also take a car if you feel like it.
As you progress, your team steadily increases in level and unlocks new abilities. Nothing too deep, but it’s always fun to try out the latest toys. Additionally, collectibles can be exchanged for additional outfits. A lot of it is niche throwbacks to very specific comics.
Given Cosmic Chaos’ wide appeal, it would be a shame not to be able to play the campaign with friends and family. Instead, local co-op is locked behind the game’s free-form “instant action” mode. It’s better than nothing, but it definitely feels like a missed opportunity.
If you’re looking for some refreshing superhero action, especially suitable for younger players, DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is worth checking out. Unique and easy to pick up, there is a pleasure unique to Happy His Harbor.
