Dead Island 2 uses a deep skill card system that allows you to further customize your Slayer character beyond the initial starting build. New skill cards frequently unlock early in the 15-hour story mode, but not all are useful. Some are much better than others. For example, including early binary decisions that can be undone but with clear good and bad options. The best skills to unlock in Dead Island 2 are:
Best skills in Dead Island 2
Skill trees are divided into four categories: Abilities, Survivors, Slayers, and Numen. This guide contains minor spoilers Some late-game skills provide plot points, so know ahead of time. Spoiler minders can also read about her best skills in the first two categories, Abilities and Survivor.
ability
dodge
This is very important as you can only equip Dodge again block. They are free to change, but everyone on our team agreed. Avoidance is better.
drop kick
Similarly, you can equip a Flying Kick or a Drop Kick, but not both at the same time. Flying kicks do more damage, but drop kicks blast zombies away, giving them breathing room and honestly fun to watch.
Special Attack – Dash Strike
Ultimately, this slot gives you a choice of 3 special moves. I love them all, but Dash Strike is a great choice. This is because there are other skill cards that I recommend using in conjunction with this later on. However, if you’re playing in co-op, I’d like to add that War Cry can be just as helpful.
blood rush
Some of the skills in this section are autophage skills, but there are always caveats, so I wouldn’t really recommend them in this guide. They’re basically Dead Island 2’s ideas of cursed skills that have both strengths and weaknesses. Blood Rush is great because it can be combined with evasion to counter attacks and build Fury.
overhead smash
The final skill card slot in this first category allows you to imitate one of the game’s Apex Variant zombies in Fury Mode: Crusher, Screamer, or Throbber. You can’t go wrong here, but we like Ground Pound because it’s the perfect finishing move to apply right before Fury runs out.
survivor
There are 17 cards to choose from for the Survivor category, any of which can be placed in any of the four slots here. We’ve highlighted the best ones below.
greedy
This card gives more Fury when you kill a zombie while Furying. This means that as long as you train your zombie arms, legs, and head, Fury can keep his mode active longer.
biological suction
This pairs with Dash Strike to provide a health boost each time it is used. This is a great way to restore HP and clear personal space. These two things need to be done frequently in this game.
safe space
Safe Space, one of the early unlocks in the game, provides an area-of-effect blast every time you use your Medkit, throwing back invading zombies and giving you room to breathe. As you can see, in Dead Island 2 the undead are always at your fingertips, so this is our favorite skillthe theme of his card.
short fuse
This is arguably the best skill card in the game. You can enter Fury mode when your Fury meter is only half full. This is a true lifesaver as the later enemies are really cavernous and Fury takes care of almost everyone quickly.
slayer
Skull Skewers
I made the mistake of not throwing my weapon much until the end of the game, but with this skill in particular, it’s very effective as it adds an explosion effect every time you aim and throw at your target.
Corpse Bomb
This adds more explosions, but only if you kill an enemy in fury mode. Still, with Short Fuse, we keep setting off fireworks because it can happen so often.
dead eye
This is one of my personal favorites, and I think you’ll love it. This allows the curveball item to recharge faster with each hit. It stacks according to the number of hits, so for example a grenade that destroys 3 zombies will recharge faster than 1 or 2.
Rim Reaper
In this game, you’ll often hack zombies’ arms and legs, so you can also regain some health for your wounded efforts. But even in solo play, it’s one of the best cards in the game.
Numen
Corpse Blossom
If you like status effects, and you should, this card makes them even more effective, because zombies killed by status effects explode like bombs made with that status effect. Sends electricity or other effects outside the horde.
Born Survivor
This is a last chance type card game idea. It takes anything that deals a fatal blow to you and instead creates an explosion that drains your rage.
As you can see, I set out to create a specific type of character. Someone who likes AoE attacks, needs personal space, can heal himself like Wolverine, and finds joy in blowing things up. Given the way this game throws hordes at your doorstep for 15-30 hours, I highly recommend this build, but with dozens of cards to choose from, I’m sure other good builds are possible. Whatever you decide, don’t make it alone. Check out our Dead Island 2 guide.
