Deep Rock Galactic Season 3 is set to launch in November of this year. The new season will add biome-altering special effects to Hoxxes IV. It also adds brand new grenades and new activities waiting to be discovered in mines full of monsters. Prior to the start of Season 3, we played an instance of a new activity incorporating two stages.
In the first phase, you clear out the Rockpox nests, and in the second phase, you mine an asteroid infested with Rockpox, which is bringing the epidemic to Earth. Of the two, the one I enjoyed the most was the former, in which you must work with your team to track down and clear out her Glyphid Grunts and Glyphid Praetorian nests infected with the Rockpox contagion. This disease causes bulbous growths in the creature. These are the only weak spots in the outer shell that are otherwise impenetrable.
Deep Rock Galactic has always been a swarm-based co-op shooter similar to Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood, but with more distinct classes and roles for each player in the team. The new enemy types haven’t added any real difference to the gameplay experience when compared to past seasons. You have to be careful to only shoot at specific spots on your enemies.
I most enjoyed the nesting mechanic that comes with these new enemy hordes. Nests that spawn Rockpox-infected enemies must be cleansed in order to be destroyed. If you get close to the nest, you too will slowly become infected. This means that while diving in the mines, you’ll need to keep an eye on your Rockpox infection levels. It must be coated, and the rest vacuum the nest’s weakened tendrils. So it’s also good to have someone in charge of cleaning her Glyphid.
I really like the collaborative nature of this activity. This was Deep Rock Galactic’s strength against similar experiences. Abilities associated with each of the individual classes (Engineer, Gunner, Driller, and Scout) already encourage players to take on specific roles during each excursion. Unfortunately, many of the new activities added in recent seasons have strayed a bit from that, focusing primarily on shooting and then favoring the Gunner. It helped me coordinate my search and move towards finding and completely eradicating the .
That praise cannot easily be applied to the other half of the new activity. Considering you need to keep waves of enemies away while protecting and maintaining the drill that is mining the asteroid, this activity seems to favor the Gunner.
Of course, these new activities aren’t the only missions you can tackle every time you join an expedition. It is in these other goals that Engineers, Drillers and Scouts still shine the brightest. That is wonderful. Don’t get me wrong. However, we hope that the purpose of these new seasonal activities will give more supportive classes more opportunities to shine. I’d like to see more activities geared toward exploration and scouting so other classes can shine a little more.
At the very least, all classes get a little more dangerous in Season 3, thanks to new grenades coming to the game. The Shredder Swarm disperses a swarm of blades that pursue enemies as it explodes, scurrying through the air in search of prey. Scout’s Voltaic Stun Sweeper is also a lot of fun, boomeranging through the air and hitting enemies multiple times. Along with his two of these, the Gunner gets a Tactical his Lead Buster that fires bullets in all directions when detonated, and the Driller with an explosive shotgun-like blast he has three rows of razor blades. Get his Ripper to fire the Spinlord.
Deep Rock Galactic continues to be a ton of fun, and Season 3’s new content offering should continue into the next season as fans work to unlock new Battle Passes and cosmetic collections. , if you’re anything like me, the new content provides a good excuse to get back into the game for a few rounds with friends without having to buy the Battle Pass. Mark Delaney, Editor of GameSpot Guides As with, I feel like I’ve already hit peak battle pass among all the live service games I play regularly. I don’t think you can reasonably invest in something else at this point. But having a reason to return to Deep Rock Galactic is always a good thing in my book.
Deep Rock Galactic is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC. Season 3 will launch first on PC and on Steam on November 3rd. It will then launch on Xbox and PlayStation consoles on November 17th.
