Part of Europe is moving to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, and the European Union’s home country also supports this.
European Union regulators have approved a proposed $68.7 billion deal. Following a move by the UK to block cloud gaming on the grounds that it negatively impacts them, EU regulators have introduced a requirement for past and future games to be added to the cloud if there is an agreement to bring them to other platforms. We have determined that the conditions are sufficient to proceed with the transaction. Service platform (currently does not include ABK games).
With EU approval, only the UK and US Federal Trade Commissions would need to sign the deal for full entry into force. A public hearing with the FTC is scheduled for early August.
The CMA responded on social media, saying: “Microsoft’s proposal, accepted today by the European Commission, will allow Microsoft to set the terms of service for this market for the next decade. It is an alternative to a free, open and competitive market. Microsoft sells. Subject to ongoing regulation of the games you play, the platforms you sell to, and the terms and conditions of sale.” (Twitter response thread from CMA)
