i love animals I love animals, so I was excited to review a game about cute foxes, but I’ve never seen the horrifying truth of what this game actually is.Endling: Extinction is Forever is the final story of the fox and the end of all that is good and pure in this.old.
Ending opens with a terrifying scene. Wildfires spread rapidly and animals, including a fox, were forced out of their homes and fled for their lives. Players are asked to stay safe by avoiding fire. After running to a nearby cave, it is revealed that the fox is pregnant, and she gives birth to four adorable cubs (colors you choose! <3).
Now, that’s great, but the world these cubs came from is a world I don’t want to live in. It can range from berries to fish to other small animals. It lasts a few minutes each night and must return to its burrow before sunrise. Food becomes more limited as the day goes on as humans slowly destroy the environment around you. I’m in. Your job is to keep Bebe safe and fed!
However, we see this not possible during the heartbreaking cutscenes of the second or third night, when one of the Beebee’s is taking a nap. I wanted to prevent this somehow, so I restarted my last save, but I could only see it twice… Sad anyway! The whole game is sad. No spoilers, but if you’re looking for a happy ending, there isn’t one. What you’re getting is hard reality with pretty graphics.
And yes, as much as the world gets ugly, Endling is a beautiful game. The 3D environment slowly evolved over time, making things more interesting after playing for days on end. And although I was only moving left and right (on a 2D plane), the world felt much bigger than it actually was. There are so many nooks and crannies to check out (when prompted) and different paths. After your child is taken away, you can follow a trail of scents that reminded you of Wolf Link from Twilight Princess. The in-game timer was constantly on its toes to check on the remaining cubs and we were back in the cave by morning. , has a map that opens while exploring, making it easy to return to a safe location in time.
This is not a beautiful story, so we have to stop telling ourselves that this is a beautiful story. But I love the developers for making such an honest game. Humans need more “truth” to show that their actions have impact. Overall, this is a bittersweet game. The story is bitter, but the gameplay is sweet. The story flows well, and even though the game doesn’t tell you what to do, your instincts kick in and you want your kids to survive to survive.
Endling: Extinction is Forever is a good game for survival fans, but like I said before, don’t expect this adventure to lift your spirits or make you feel better. In fact, we recommend playing this game with your child (age 9 to her 13). And even if you try to keep bad things from happening, it doesn’t always have a happy ending.
(Wow, I feel like I was so downer with this review. So here’s a cute picture of an adorable fox cub to cheer you up ;D)
