WASHINGTON — A fight erupted Friday night as a brawl broke out during video review of headshots early in the second period of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s game at the Washington Capitals.

Patrick Maroon fought Garnett Hathaway, but officials focused on Capitals forward Nicolas Obe Kubel performing an illegal check to the head of Lightning defenseman Cal Foote. As Tampa Bay’s Maroons and Washington’s Hathaway tangled, a handful of other players joined the initial scrum, trading a few pushes and pushes around the fight.

Nick Paul jumped off the bench momentarily before being urged by his Lightning teammates to avoid a 10-game suspension.
Ove Kubel was sent off and given a match penalty. This is an automatic suspension pending review by the NHL’s Player Safety Division. If suspended, he will miss at least the second half of both teams’ home-and-home series on Sunday.

The Capitals thrashed all five minutes, with Sonny Milano, who was penalized by Ober Kubel, breaking out of the box seven seconds after the Lightning’s power play expired to score.
The Maroons, one of only four players in league history to win three consecutive Stanley Cup seasons with two different teams, and Washington’s Hathaway were each given five minutes of brawling and ten minutes of cheating.
Hoot left the ice and was ruled out for the rest of the game in the second break.
