unusual discovery

Release: October 13th
Developer: Epic Llama Games
Price at launch: $17 |£13.59 |AU$24.60
Given the sheer amount of modern media that adores the 1980s, you can afford to miss Unusual Findings, a point-and-click adventure set in the heyday of 8-bit video games, VHS, and futuristic neon. But even if it wears the very ubiquitous nostalgia, this throwback has plenty of style and substance to match. (especially for scamming “pay-per-view adult” content), and instead of accessing free TV shows, I stumbled upon the distress call of an alien spaceship. The signal may be dire, but it’s also (probably) related to the deaths of locals. (yes, we have a video store). Unusual Findings’ charm is more in its exquisite pixel art than the period traps it relies on.

Release: October 14th
Developers: Team by Team
Launch Price: $18 |£13.94 |AU$26.05
Atama is a psychological horror game about Kaede who arrives in the small Japanese village of Kisaragi to visit her aunt. This aunt has stopped writing and Kaede wants to know why. You can imagine what happens next. The village of Kisaragi is spooky, cursed, and full of enemies. Kaede can’t fight, but she can live in her enemies’ perspective. It’s basically a stealth horror game, but it features a bizarre story and a solemn, slightly retro approach to world building . If stealth is too much for you, there’s a story mode to de-stress. If you like stress, there’s also a post-game hardcore mode that adds permadeath and more.
Lost Eidolon

Release: October 14th
Developer: Ocean Drive Studio, Inc.
Launch price: $25 | £30 | AUD $50
The Renaissance of Strategy RPGs (opens in new tab) Continue to Lost Eidolons. It has a distinctly modern (intentionally non-retro) take on the genre. The story and setting are familiar — a peaceful land has been attacked by a tyrant that must be overthrown — but the chunky pixels are invisible as studio Ocean Drive opted for a more immersive and realistic graphic style. Hmm. Still, this is very much his SRPG. Command soldiers tactically, customize and recruit troops, build camps, and learn about those who have joined you. As Jon pointed out in the linked article above, many Number of new SRPGs for 2022, this is one for those who like high production levels.
Trifox

Release: October 15th
Developer: Glowfish Interactive
Launch Price: $18 |£13.49 |AU$26.05
Trifox is another homage to 1990s 3D platformers, but shares a bird’s-eye view that sits more closely with modern games like Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Super Mario 3D World.Another thing that distinguishes it from you are old 90’s games have three playstyles. You can deploy as Warrior, Mage, Engineer, and even create hybrids. Overall, there are 30 abilities to play with in 4 different worlds, and you can expect the usual mix of easy-going combat, stress-free exploration, and vibrant color schemes. It’s been a busy year for his 3D platformer (thanks Kangaroo Chaos and Froggan).
Stella Pastoris
Steam page (opens in new tab)
Release: October 15th
Developer: Cryptomnesic Softworks
Price at launch: $8 | £5.79 | AUD 11.50
Stella Pastoris is a “god game meets shmup” inspired by the old SNES game ActRaiser. The games are vastly different (ActRaiser is a platformer with city-building elements), but share an interest in fusing his two seemingly incompatible genres. In Terra Pastoris, you must protect a group of Malthusian monks on a beleaguered space station. You’ll fight (read: shoot) mechanical evangelists while also managing the survival of a “growing number of loyal companions”. Everything about Pastoris is a bit confusingly strange.
