Moonscars is clearly a Metroidvania with a Soulsborne bent, but in the context of the genre, it’s better to think of Blasphemous meeting Hollow Knight. Protagonist Irma is on a mission to “uncover the mystery of her existence,” and the story unfolds in predictably cryptic ways, but most importantly, the 2D pixel world she explores is breathtaking. Be beautiful and miserable. A blasphemous look like Ghosts ‘n Goblins. Combat is also great, with a strong focus on parrying (don’t worry, windows are unusually forgiving). It’s a tough game, but the difficulty curve flattens out in his five hours or so, let alone understanding some of its esoteric aspects that seem inspired by Demon’s Souls’ World Tendency system.
