It looks like the Metroid Prime series wasn’t the only Metroid series working on at Retro Studios. did you know the game developer’s other A project that never saw the light of day.
metroid tactics was a concept proposed internally by Paul Tozer, a member of the Metroid Prime team. This enigmatic project was intended for his Wii, and the pitch was created in the “second half” of 2007 after completing his third prime his game. It is a “prequel to the series” and the events take place “long before all other games in the Metroid series.”
The very moment when Samus Aran left Chozo, whom he had raised since childhood, met mankind, and became a bounty hunter. This game is also humanity’s first encounter with space pirates and Metroids.
“Samus works with an elite team of highly trained Galactic Federation troopers and colorful bounty hunters to stop the invasion of several Galactic Federation planets in various locations on the planet, such as Norion and Earth, and finally… You will have to fight the Space Pirates at your planetary outpost, Zebeth.”
Tozer describes how the game resembled the turn-based tactical series XCOM:
“It’s basically XCOM. It was XCOM in the Metroid universe, but instead of fighting aliens, you’re fighting space pirates. They’re aliens too, but different.”
Samus was supposed to be the protagonist of the game, but it seems she was just one of many soldiers commanded by the player. Players would control her one Commander, specifically known as Justin Bailey (a throwback to the famous Passcode from the NES’s original Metroid his game). Tozer adds:
“Players take on the role of the commander of the Galactic Federation…he even has his name. I won’t repeat myself. It’s a pretty silly name.”
The project was going to take advantage of the Wii’s unique controls, and for Retro it was going to be a “relatively cheap” project, as it could reuse many of the Prime series’ engines, art assets and animations.
So what was the conclusion of Metroid Tactics? The project was only worked on by Paul Tozer, but was rejected by Retro’s “upper”, so Nintendo never saw the pitch. Did You Know Gaming’s latest video goes into even more detail.you can check it out Youtube.
