Hello everyone! our rhythm FPS, Metal: Helsingerwill release for Xbox Series X|S on September 15th and will be available on Game Pass on day one. Before that happens, before I unleash you all on the demonic hordes of Hell, we want to share what we are thinking. Metal: Helsinger A uniquely intense experience and how we got to where we are today.
of Metal: Helsinger You embark on a hellish journey of vengeance through eight hells. Most basic actions are performed to the beat, so shoot, dash, or finisher to the rhythm. This contributes to your “rage” multiplier. The higher the multiplier, the more intense the music, the more damage it inflicts, and when the rage is maxed out, the vocals kick in for a full metal experience.
Various evil weapons are mixed in the way they interact with the beats. For example, a shotgun allows you to exterminate demons with heavy semi-note finality, while dual-his pistols allow you to quickly take down enemies with a quarter-note staccato. Each weapon also has an ultimate ability that can be further combined to give you even more options for how you play. Even dashes and reloads are important in a symphony of destruction.
you drive the music
The music itself beats to the heart of the game, and we’re honored to have an incredible original OST played by a legendary metal artist, but it’s you who powers the whole hell machine.
of Metal: Helsinger you drive the song not the other way around. The purpose of this is to make you feel more connected to the performance, the game world and the music. Everything flows, from the rhythmic impact of the demon hitting the ground to its relentless advance. You are the personification of the song. You fuel the metal, and the metal fuels you.
The Beat Goes On
While playing the game ourselves, we noticed something strange. Visit the studio’s kitchen and you’ll find the developer punching his coffee machine selections in his head to an imaginary beat. From my desk, I hear my co-workers tapping to a rhythm that doesn’t exist.
The rhythm of the game just… sustains. As I walk around all day, I find myself subconsciously keeping the metronome on or humming my favorite part of the song I just played. I hope that this kind of musical hypnosis that flow and rhythmic playing provokes can happen to others as well.
We know the game itself is unique, but we’ve never had a meeting where everyone sat down and wondered, “How does this game differ from other games?” Combine elements from your favorite games. I have a concept to make this game that is a shooter, metal music, rhythm game, demon fighting to get out of hell.
Some of the team had made shooters before, and many of us listened to a ton of metal, but rhythm games that combined all this was a new field. Good thing you played with us.
We focused on the shooter aspect, balancing rhythmic gameplay with being challenging. We knew that in a game where timing and flow are everything, everything had to be extremely precise and responsive. When a player performed well, they needed to know it. Our Solution: Screaming vocals pierce your ears from the screen when you reach the full score multiplier. But in a good way.
Getting the right feedback for on-beat and off-beat actions, the scoring structure, making the UI feel integrated into the experience, all of this was a long back-and-forth process.
like playing a metal album
Each level, or slice of hell, of the game is set to a tune shaped into a layered, reactive soundtrack. The level selection screen resembles a series of records, and in the deepest pits of hell awaits his final showdown with the Red Judge set in “No Tomorrow” played by System of a Down’s Serj Tankian. The result is Metal He hopes the game is like playing the album to life.
I hope you enjoy playing Metal: Helsinger It will be released on Xbox Series X|S on September 15th and on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
