I won’t brag, but I won mini golf once. And I wasn’t even a child. That’s this year. With this boundless confidence, I decided to give Cursed to Golf a try. This is a roguelike game where you escape purgatory with your golf prowess and return to the real world. You play a tiny golf-he champion trying to establish himself as the world’s best golfer before a sudden storm strikes, dramatically robbing him of his life and sinking him 60 feet below.
In Cursed to Golf, play 18 tough golf holes to leave purgatory and claim your title as the best. Roguelikes are more creative than ever in finding ways to make you play the same game over and over until you find an exit. I especially liked Hades’ formula and he didn’t stop playing Slay the Spire after I bought it on my phone. The former’s premise is very similar to Cursed to Golf, both of which evoke a desire to break free from supernatural prisons (Hades’ Underworld and Cursed to Golf’s Purgatory). Slay the Spire is all about time and smart resource management. It’s a bit like managing lineups and powers in Cursed to Golf.
The art is adorable, with a rounded, bouncy pixelated style and purples and greens that evoke a Halloween-like vibe. , with luscious grass, the art makes this terrifying setting so compelling. Ace card power-ups are also at your disposal, making the actual golf more engaging than just choosing how hard you hit the ball. There are his three clubs, an iron, a wedge and a driver, and you can choose their direction and speed, but the course is pretty tough without some extra underworld magic. Cards that let you freeze the ball in the air and drop it to the floor are good if you have a small landing platform, but there are also cards that let you practice your shot first before you make that all-important swing. Any help would be greatly appreciated if you can only hit 5 shots on each hole.
Another main cast member appears there. The Scotsman is a ghost who guides you and owns a chain of stores (called Eterni-tee, great) where you can buy all the important Ace cards. He wears a ghostly flowing beard and a green kilt and has a flaming golf ball where his heart should be. And he provides great tutorials on how to start your golf adventure, and even the cutest little golf cart to carry your kit around.
The holes themselves are stylishly platformed. Not the holes you might think of in mini golf or big golf, these holes will move you up, down, left and right, allowing you to play the same hole multiple ways depending on your skill and confidence. Five shots to complete a hole sounds tough, but you can get shots along the way by hitting statues that replenish your stash.this is boring Easy, But it makes these levels much more achievable.
Players also have the option of choosing different paths through the course. Harder holes for better rewards? Or is it just an ordinary hole with a good chance of surviving? it is up to you.
Cursed to Golf is a lot of fun. The stakes are high, but it’s a chill indie adventure with a dark premise and adorable artwork. Just getting through the first section of the game was enough to make me smile and feel appropriately challenged by the gameplay. increase. The only downside is that I feel like this would be a great project to try on a couch with a steam deck, which I don’t own. For real I want to change that.
