The first caveat is that setting these lights on your monitor is not difficult, but you need to do some checks first. These lights only work on flat back panels. Govee website (Opens in a new tab).. What surprised me with the number of monitor screens I have is that they are incompatible because the back part doesn’t actually make the light mount work. The flat back panel I went to worked easily, but was completely non-starter for about half of my home monitors.
Once installed, it requires calibration that needs to be done via the Govee smartphone app for iPhone or Android. Then connect to the light via Bluetooth. Again, this is a fairly straightforward process, but it’s a bit disappointing that there are no desktop apps, given that they are likely to be used on PCs. The app has additional calibration options such as white balance and saturation. These should definitely be tried as well.
This is because the Govee light works by using a camera mounted at the top of the screen. Problems can occur because we are collecting data through visual sensors. Different screens have slightly different light displays depending on the angle, making it impossible to fully adjust the colors. The lights are also amazingly bright and great, but sometimes you need to turn them off so you can do it in the app.
I’m having a hard time getting the lights out of black or most dark colors in red on the screen. I’ve tried white balance and saturation to mitigate this, but it hasn’t been completely fixed yet and everything else is a bit too blue. Bold color changes make them less noticeable, but they can still make a big difference from time to time. The transition between colors can be interrupted because the camera feels like it’s catching up. For a general atmosphere and nice bright colors, that’s perfectly fine, but with a device like this, you won’t get a perfect color reproduction.
However, there are some good things about setting up a camera. There are surprisingly many apps that block screen reading software. In many cases, there are games such as Netflix and some programs that may stop working on a regular basis. In addition, the screen-pointing camera allows you to use it with anything that is playing, including consoles that may otherwise be incompatible. Other RGB lighting products may avoid this with an expensive pass-through box, but a camera pointed at the screen is also not a half-bad solution.
Overall the effect is very good, certainly not as good as the expensive product, but I don’t think it’s that important. The colors can be a bit off, but most of the time you’re adding a really cool cyberpunk glow that suits your experience. They can easily illuminate the room, and two desk lamps to help you do it can be nicely and fairly separated to help you do it .. The downside is that there are quite a few cables that are difficult to manage.
Still, it’s very complete, but with a little budget, it does a lot to enhance the game room. Unless you’re really looking for it, you won’t notice the cheesy feeling.
