Project Zomboid
Year: 2013 (early access)
Developer: Indie Stone
Death is inevitable. With Project Zomboid, that’s doubly true. More than a decade after the zombie survival classic Project Zomboid launched, a friend and I finally set up a server. I’ve tweaked the settings a bit to make it safer, but Project Zomboid is tough even on the easiest settings, and we’ve all seen his second, third, and even fourth character. It didn’t take long for me to be able to use . That’s when the anger quitting began.
It went very well on the points. Even when the water supply finally stopped, I collected enough rain and wood shavings to sanitize rags and make stew each day. All three main crew members had their own vehicles, thanks to my character’s hotwire ability. One day, while walking through the house, he sees a living settlement blooming with flowers. Players read in the yard, take off their pants to join a few reps, or dismantle pieces of furniture to bolster their defenses.
It had grown into a really bustling little community. But this genteel life came to an abrupt end when friends who didn’t play survival games arrived. Asking them where they spawned was an ordeal in itself. “Oh, I’m in a little house,” they said. Well… what’s around you?
Thankfully my partner set up the server so we could see each other on the map. So, being a great friend, I gathered some snacks and weapons together and headed almost the entire length of the Knox County map to retrieve my stranded friend. I immediately ran into trouble.
Soon, this so-called friend discovered that pressing the Q button causes the character to scream. And as they kept spamming it, the Horde came in. We squirmed a little while I tried to explain to her what she meant by “burden,” but it was quickly shattered. Meet Peter Phil, a vicious bandit character with a level 5 fishing skill.
On the second attempt my car ran out of gas in the middle of the horde of course.
I was eventually able to bring my friend back to base camp, but scouting with someone new to the game is stressful (you should know, it’s usually me). Basically, Screw went through the character design process five bloody hours at a time, and in the end, we both left in a rage. I love my friends and that’s why I play solo RPGs.
