Beginning with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has told many different end-of-era stories. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Writer/director James Gunn is taking over for his DC studio boss in rivalry. We won’t be making any more Marvel movies in the near future.
Yeah, yeah, after three movies of their own, two Avengers movies, a Thor movie, and a holiday special, this is the end of the road for this particular Guardians of the Galaxy roster. But it’s not all that shocking to see a new iteration of the group appearing down the road.
Like many other recent MCU movies, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is pretty self-contained. This story only concerns the Guardian’s own past and present, and does not refer to his story in the MCU, which he is not directly involved with. But it’s still a Marvel movie.
WARNING: The rest of this article contains scenes from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as well as the mid- and post-credits scenes.
It has a rather lengthy, Lord of the Rings-esque ending, as you might expect from a movie like “The Last Ride” like this. In this epic final battle, Rocket defeats and kills the evil High Evolutionary that transformed him years ago.
Later, the Guardian, along with the people of Knowhere, manages to very dramatically rescue all of his ship’s captives, from a horde of gray-haired children to a new herd of baby raccoons.
Each Guardian (all non-CGI characters) that doesn’t stay in the group has its own little ending. Gamora returned to the Ravagers and was finally on good terms with Peter. Drax and Nebula take care of gray-haired children. Mantis embarks on an adventure of her own, along with her new tentacle monster friends who were trapped in the belly of a High Evolutionary ship.
Peter then returns to Earth to visit his grandfather, whom he had not seen since the night he was abducted by the Ravagers in the 1980s.
As for the remaining heroes, their endings will come later, during the credits.
Guardians of the Galaxy mid-credits scene explained: New team?
The first bonus scene, which comes minutes after the end credits, catches up with a few characters hanging out together outside a town on some new alien planet. There’s Rocket, Groot, Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo the space dog, and the main little grey-haired girl, the children rescued by the Guardians at the end of the movie. The girl is Britney She’s crazy about Spears and Korn.
Also, they all wear Guardians of the Galaxy uniforms and are ready to fight a horde of some kind of space animal that is trying to invade the town. He asks Rocket if he feels bad about having to fight these animals that aren’t there. That’s what Rocket is saying here.
This doesn’t feel like a cast like Marvel would make a new standalone movie, between three live-action actors (Will Poulter, Sean Gunn, and the kid in her first high-profile role). ‘s star power is basically zero. At the same time, Adam Warlock is a very important character in the comics, not one that Marvel would throw out as soon as it was introduced. Likewise, the film cemented Rocket as her one of the smartest individuals in the entire MCU. It was he, not the high-evolutionary, who actually perfected the high-speed evolution technology. So he’s one of the ten smartest people in the universe.perhaps of the smartest. And it would be a shame if we didn’t get to see him flex that big brain a little more.
This brings us to the subject of Rocket’s best friend and post-credits scene.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 post-credits scene description: Legendary Star-Lord
At the end of the movie, Peter Quill visits his grandfather, who has returned to Earth for the first time in a while. In the post-credits scene, after Peter and Grandpa Quill tearfully reunite, we catch up with a more mundane moment: breakfast.
It’s a funny cute scene with no story. Since they’re talking about household chores, Peter thinks it’s kind of silly to have him mow the lawn. But the biggest revelation comes from the title card at the end of the scene, after the movie fades to black for the last time.
The card reads: The legendary Star-Lord is back.
So Gamora, Nebula, Mantis and Drax may disappear in the near future, but not Peter. Does that make a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie more likely? But the new Guardians and Peter will likely be MCU floaters instead, appearing in other character movies and big crossovers. It sets up a long-term cosmic story arc, so there should be plenty of room for Peter and Rocket, and the rest of the members, to remain involved in the franchise.
