Metal: Helsinger is the debut release from the Swedish studio. OutsiderReleased in September 2022, the rhythm and first-person shooter hybrid has reminded players that video games and music go together like peanut butter and jam.
At first blush, Metal: Helsinger looks pretty easy. Your objective is to make your way from room to room until you meet the final boss of each stage. If you’re someone who likes to compete for scores on leaderboards, you can choose to take part in additional challenges that increase your rank, but otherwise the journey is relatively straightforward.
What makes it stand out is the nuances in its context, world-building and rhythm mechanics. Set in Hell, players play as part humans and part demons called “Unknown” and fight their way out. The twist is that for optimal performance, you should strive to destroy your enemies to the beat of the music. This gives you higher damage, more devastating weapon effects, and higher scoring combos.
It’s not just your powers that are enhanced by Metronome Murder, it’s the soundtrack itself. Brilliantly, as the score combo doubles down, various guitar his tracks are layered over the raw beat, culminating in a roaring vocal that completes the track. The effectiveness of this mechanism is difficult to describe and has to be experienced. A short game, but one that focuses more on virtuosity than mere perfection, motivates me to return for multiple games in hopes of getting one step closer to a perfectly executed musical slaughter. David Goldfarb is the co-founder of development studio The Outsiders, Metal: Helsingercreative director.he used to be a game director payday 2and Lead Designer battlefield 3 When Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
According to Goldfarb, metal: Helsinger It was never meant to be the debut of The Outsider. original game from the studio dark bonewas canceled after four years in development after publisher Take-Two decided to part ways with the team. . Helsinger It was – ironically – something of a hailstone. It’s no wonder Goldfarb and his team are “still unwinding” after release, but it’s certainly been “challenging” after release.
the idea of metal: Helsinger A more peaceful time has come. As Goldfarb recalls, “I was playing. [Grand Theft Auto] Vice City, drive along the beach listening to some 80’s music.intersection of music [playing games] I felt really good.
“So when we were playing Doom i was listening in 2016 Meshuggah, and, perhaps coincidentally, started firing on the beat. It felt like I was in a state of flow, and I thought, “Cool!”
His self in 2016 must have said the same thing to the line-up of metal vocalists he and his team were finally able to bring into the project. Icons such as Serj Tankian (system of a down), Matt Heaphy (Trivium), Michael Stan (dark stillness), Randy Blythe (lamb of god), Alyssa White Gulls (Arch enemy) and Tatiana Schmairk (ginger) featured, reads like Who’s Who in the metal music genre.
“The process was like a snowball,” says Goldfarb. “I had a list, but I didn’t think I could actually get these people.” Fate decided otherwise. Her one mom on the music team knows her Mikael Stanne girlfriend, and once the first piece of this puzzle is in place, a world-class roster has slowly been assembled.
“I remember when we got Randy [Blythe] Because I’m a huge Lamb of God fan. I thought, ‘I can’t believe it!'” says Goldfarb with a smile. ‘It was a completely crazy ride. None of us knew anything.
The team was equally surprised when the demo released online became wildly popular. “I objected [making a demo] when first grown. My experience with demos is that 98% of the time, it’s too much work for little return,” explains Goldfarb. “But the marketing was like, ‘You have to actually play the game to understand it.’
Even after launch, this has proven to be true. “I think our game is unique in that way. I think we can show people the game forever. Doom Clone”. But when people sit down and play, it’s like, ‘Okay, this isn’t exactly what I thought.
Goldfarb’s broad view of the game is equally unexpected. ‘dark bone It was a really sad game for many reasons. [its inspiration], Grendel story,” he thinks. Making that game was really important to me because I always felt like a monster.
‘metal It was a way of finding joy in making things again,” he explains. “This is a message of hope…a message of rebellion, as strange as it sounds.”
Based on his own experience, Goldfarb has a message for aspiring game developers: Don’t work for people who don’t represent your interests, creative or otherwise.
“Everyone finds their own way. I don’t know exactly how I got there. I’m lucky and grateful to have been able to make a game that people love – most If. I hope we can keep doing that,” adds Goldfarb.
And for those who aren’t fans of metal and first-person shooters, Goldfarb urges you to “get the demo and play it on the lowest difficulty.” “Even if you’re not one of those, I really think it’s something you can enjoy playing.”
