A cute game is coming this week. Melatonin is a rhythmic indie game, fully enhanced with chill vibes and pizza graffiti. It consists of miniature his rhythm games combined by an overall aesthetic and dreamy theme as well as an interesting twist. No overlays you would expect from a rhythm game.
Rather than the genre’s ubiquitous overlays, Melatonin “uses animation and sound cues to keep the beat going without any intimidating overlays or interfaces.” It’s always interesting when a game ditches genre conventions, especially when they’re so entrenched that it’s hard to find a game without them. I think it’s from
Melatonin’s mini-games and environments are meant to be hand-drawn, colorful, and coordinated with the music. Indeed, there is a unified aesthetic that draws on a pastel palette rich in purples, greens and blues.
Plot-wise, Melatonin is about the relationship between dreams and reality. As the night’s dreams continue and lead to the events of waking, we learn more and more about the protagonist and his story. Harmonize different dreamlike levels, including music filled with magic,” said the game description.
Melatonin is done in 20 levels divided into 5 chapters. Each level introduces new music. There’s also an unlockable hard mode if that’s your jam, or a practice mode to guide you, with “a lot of assist features if you’re lost”. I think you’ll find this to be standard practice in many rhythm games by now, but customizable features have always been attractive in indies.
