Rainbow Six Siege joins the Ubisoft+ Classics catalog. This means that all Extra and Premium members of PlayStation Plus can now play for free. A multiplayer shooter where information and knowledge are as important as purpose and destruction, Rainbow Six Siege rewards clever strategy and planning. If you haven’t participated in the tense, tactical firefights of Rainbow Six Siege yet, now is the perfect time to do so. With 65 different operators available, it doesn’t get any better than this.
Every Rainbow Six Siege operator introduces unique game-changing gadgets, but Year 7 sped things up with the launch of Season 1’s Demon Veil, especially new defending operator Thistle. Azami’s unique gadget, Kiva He Barrier, allows him to deploy a bulletproof barrier on a variety of surfaces at great distances. Controlling cover, barriers, line of sight, and movement space is just as important in Rainbow Six Siege as stable aiming. Thistle’s tusk barrier can change map geometry on the fly.
As game designer Dominic Clément explains: Due to technical constraints, it is always possible. Once we had that, one of the first things we did was take the elamine and smooth them out to make big pancakes. I realized that I was doing my job and that meant I didn’t have to get close to the surface to create the cover and I could react. ”
Previously, if a defender wanted to block an entrance or fix a breach, they had to go through the lengthy process of placing cover, leaving them vulnerable and at risk. Additionally, specific breaches simply could not be blocked. Thistle can now build barriers as fast as an attacker kills them. “It felt like we were filling a hole in the game,” he says Clément. “There are many operators who can completely destroy a map, but none of them can repair or patch the damage.”
Rainbow Six Siege was released in 2015, but the development team continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible under the hood. As Clément points out, they were constantly updating the game behind the scenes to support new elements, and gadgets as dynamic as the Kiba Barrier presented some very specific challenges. For example, throwing a Kiva Barrier will unfold it parallel to the surface it is attached to. In a game like Rainbow Six Siege, with so many different surfaces and realistic maps, it’s very easy to misplace the Kiva Barrier slightly and extend it in the wrong direction.
“Two of the programmers, Thomas Texier and Wilfried Pouchous, are the geniuses behind Operator’s code,” says Clément. “We know how players like to stress test operators, and if it can break, players will understand how.”
Texier and Pouchous may have helped ensure barriers deployed as intended, but there was still the problem of players using them in ways developers didn’t expect. In stages, Azami’s Kiba Barriers posed an unexpected, potentially game-breaking problem, as testers discovered that bulletproof barriers could be used as climbing platforms. “Initially, we made Kiba Barriers deployable both horizontally and vertically,” he says Clément. “What this means is that when you deploy near a ledge, it expands onto the ledge and you can stack them to create new platforms for yourself. Then someone managed to build a staircase to the edge of the skybox, and we quickly realized that the player couldn’t walk without support.”
The possibility that the player has access to almost all areas, especially those that the developers did not intend for the player, where information is paramount and understanding where your opponents are is key to Siege’s gameplay. will destroy its own brand. be – can be the difference between winning and losing. Thanks to developers like Clément, Texier, and Pouchous, Siege fans needn’t worry.
Azami may have worked as an operator for seven years, but her introduction just opened the door to what’s possible with Rainbow Six Siege. “We have other ideas in mind that we want to incorporate into the game,” she says Clément.
