Sharpen your senses, warrior. Call of Duty Modern Warfare II is coming soon.
As we wait for the launch on October 28th, let’s take a closer look at the special new operator details (MWII Campaign Early Access* will also be available for those who pre-ordered digitally starting October 20th).
Announced at last month’s Call of Duty: Next Showcase event, PlayStation players who pre-ordered the digital edition of the game on the PlayStation store will receive the Oni Operator Pack**, which includes the Hiro “Oni” Watanabe operator, when Modern Warfare II launches. receive. As well as high-end weapon blueprints playable in Multiplayer, Special Ops, and the upcoming Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.
Creativity wasn’t the only thing that led to the development of this special operator. A great collaboration between Infinity Ward and PlayStation has allowed us to develop an Operator that PlayStation players want to main from day one. Below are the details of how the demon came to be.
Hiro “Oni” Watanabe
One concept that stood out early on was the idea of creating a samurai-inspired operator. The name that caught the attention among the Infinity Ward team was “Oni”, which means “devil”, and that helped kick off the peculiar story about the Operator.
When developing the backdrop for Oni’s story, it was important for Infinity Ward’s narrative team to develop a unique character story that could continue into the future.
Oni are the descendants of ancient samurai clans who were respected and lived by a code of honor. Decades passed, and as the samurai disbanded, the ogre family found themselves in difficult times. By the time Oni was born, his father had already established himself as a criminal in the underworld.
However, Oni’s grandfather worked to remind him that his family was not always involved in this criminal enterprise. I learned that he had a noble name.
Oni left home and joined the army to escape from his father’s path. He was highly skilled and quickly rose through the ranks, even earning himself the status of an elite multinational special forces unit carrying out missions around the world. I learned how.
Eventually he returned to his home and returned to Japan, diligently doing what his ancestors had done years ago, defending and fighting threats on the front of his house, and striving to restore his family’s prestige.
By this point, Oni’s father had become a respected figure in the underworld. He used his corrupt influence to get the demons discharged from the army.
Currently, the demon acts as a hired gun, vowing to continue fighting those who should transcend the rules of his father and samurai.
back side of mask
With a robust narrative background in place, work on designing the Oni began. When designing the Oni, the team at Infinity Ward worked on a plausible aesthetic that is contemporary yet with a regal warrior aura tied to tradition.
To make Oni feel true to form, the team dived into what the name Oni means, its etymology, culture, mythology, and whatever else they found. It was to make Oni stand out from the rest of the operators in Fair II.
Oni armor was a key element in getting the design right, so Infinity Ward started there. The Operator wears polished reflective armor, almost iridescent, but with the noticeable wear and tear expected of a Gunslinger warrior.
The operator’s helmet and bulletproof mask were also carefully considered and modified to resemble the silhouette of a samurai helmet. The ogre headdress is inspired by feudal warriors who wore similar looking traditional armor. That said, the night vision goggles on top of his helmet make it clear that Oni is a modern warrior despite his traditional spirit.
The unique Oni mask features a striking demonic design that ties into the cultural lineage of the name “oni”. It also inflicts fear on his enemies in a visceral and immediate way.
Finally, a blade tied to the demon’s back, reminiscent of the blade of an ancient samurai general. Operators wield these swords with mighty force, the last move PlayStation players are looking forward to at launch.
demon future
Part of the excitement of an operator like this is the opportunity to leverage a robust backstory and design elements to further iterate on him. This launch version of Oni is available to PlayStation Digital Pre-Order players, but players will See different iterations of Oni in the Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 Combat Pack, available free to PlayStation Plus members starting with Season 01 of Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0. .
