The first time I learned about the novel The Expanse was when the series was described as “a cosmic Game of Thrones.” Co-writing collaborators (known only as James S.A. Corey) had stood in for George R.R. This seemed appropriate because it seemed like an appropriate representation.
With nine novels and multiple short stories (many of which I really enjoy) and an incredibly entertaining TV show that just ended a year ago, the world of The Expanse is… … I feel it’s time to expand into the next world. -gen games and The Expanse: Story Series. The team at Deck Nine Games seems perfect to bring that experience to life.
writers [Ty and Daniel] It inspired me to consider creating new characters and adding lore.
“The Expanse has a huge world with a huge variety of settings, characters and stories,” explains Deck Nine Games Director Stephan Frost. “The writers [Ty and Daniel] It inspired me to consider creating new characters and adding lore. There’s a section in the game that explores what life was like for the first generation of Belters, which players will love to see, and a lot of fun to explore and create. It’s just There are characters that fans will recognize, and there are new characters that players will look forward to meeting as they play the game. “
When Deck Nine first pitched the game, Ty and Daniel liked the idea and added some suggestions for these characters and plot points. As development progressed, we received world-building notes from the authors and production company Alcon to make sure everything felt and looked like “The Expanse” seen in the TV series. Looking at some of the existing footage, it’s clear that Deck Nine Games are on the right track, capturing the hit sci-fi show. Having access to that “art bible” also helped.
“We’re big geeks on The Expanse, so this really was a passion project for a group of talented game developers to play in a world we love,” said Frost. increase. “Our film team thoroughly studied the show’s cinematography and the goal was to make it feel like a playable episode.” [of the show]. We can’t wait for Expanse fans to see what we’ve created. “
The adventure game formula that Telltale Games has established over the years has been repeated many times, but the core of delivering an interactive adventure game has been at the heart of every release. Part of that formula is player choice, and Frost unabashedly shared that we’re going to be making some tough choices – the choices we make affect the final episode of the game. – who lives, who dies, and the actions of various crew members are affected by the decisions made in every episode so far. Helping anchor the emotional connection to these influences are the highly expressive and well-animated characters that reinforce the feeling of playing in the world of The Expanse.
We’re big geeks on The Expanse, so in fact this was a passion project for a group of talented game developers to play in the world we love.
“We use motion capture technology that allows for very nuanced performances thanks to the actors and animators. These performances are very helpful in telling stories with heart and emotion.” explains Frost. “We also added a zero-gravity exploration mechanic, with much more space to explore the derelict ship while conversing with the crew of Artemis. It’s fun to attach it to the crew and get perspective from the crew on what we’re looking at.”
development of The Expanse: Story Series started just under two years ago, and Frost said that once the game was greenlit, the team wanted to get serious about the exciting content of the world. Coming off that planning session, everyone seemed to land on Kamina his drummer character as one of the team’s favorite him. Compared to the show’s other main characters, her backstory wasn’t as fleshed out as the Rocinante crew seen in “The Expanse.”
“We loved the idea of exploring her past and finding out what made her so great on the show,” Frost says. “Belts and zero gravity were the nicer parts” [of the show], So we knew we wanted gameplay that felt like we were leaning into that part of the universe. When putting all this together, I had to get approval from the authors of the book, so I pitched them the idea and they were very supportive in the direction we were going. “
If the game is going to revolve around the drummer, it’s clear that you’ll want to bring in the talented Kara Zhi to reprise the role of the drummer. She does it not only because her character is great, but because doing so brings a tremendous level of credibility to the drummer. Game immersion. After all, Gee was happy to get back to her Belter roots, and she made sure she was on board as often as possible during the game’s development.
“Working with Carla was great and 10/10 would do it again,” says Frost. “When we met her, we had to do an ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) recording while she was filming a TV show in Canada. We contacted a remote studio to have her come and do some dubbing work at a small studio. She was a very friendly, funny, and patient person, and she loved the drummer’s iconic sound. It was great to see and hear to hear the sweet everyday voices drop down into the basement. We maintained a relaxed and positive vibe as we were recording on set. But she was a big part of it, she had no ego, she worked hard, she brought great insight from when she was on the show, and without her we wouldn’t have been able to do it. Sure…and even if we wanted to, we couldn’t.”
