The original 2007 The Witcher RPG by CD Projekt Red is getting old, but the Witcher world itself continues to grow. More Netflix shows, several games from CDPR, and other adaptations are also planned.CDPR also announced that the first game will be remade. However, until that remake came out a few years later, we can see the roots of Geralt’s current popularity in 2008’s The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.
I’m not going to lie: The Witcher shows that year. These days, I encourage my friends to start with the newest game and fully invest in the world before returning to the original game. My first adventure with amnesiac Geralt was riddled with bugs, crashes, and freezes, but in the end, largely fueled by malice, I made it through. But there’s a great RPG buried under this old mess. Please help me find it.
This is my guide to make your own journey through Witcher history a little easier than mine.
buy this version
Most of us PC gamers buy games on Steam by default, but if you know CD Projekt Red, you know they’re a sister company to digital storefront GOG. This is important: ignoring Steam settings, Just buy the game on GOG.
GOG installs of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition haven’t had issues with new save games for hours yet. Often the price drops from the standard price of $10 to less than $2.
Why won’t the Witcher start?
My first time playing The Witcher on Steam, UI freezes and crashes gave me headaches, but I made it to the end. However, as of 2022, I can’t even launch the Steam version of the game. Here are some fixes, courtesy of many other players struggling with The Witcher on Steam:
If the Steam version doesn’t launch, try the following tips.
- Find the launcher in “Program Files (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/The Witcher Enhanced Edition”, right-click it, select “Properties” and in “Compatibility Settings” select “Run this program as an administrator “Choose.
- In the same settings menu,[互換モードでこのプログラムを実行する:]Click[Windows 7]Choose.
- Right click on the game in your Steam library[プロパティ]and add “-dontForceMinReqs” to the launch options text box.
Personally, none of the above worked for me. yet I can’t launch my Steam copy of The Witcher. If you don’t own a copy of the game yet and want to avoid potential headaches, seriously get it on GOG.
install these mods
Years ago I rounded up some of the best witcher 1 mods Most of it is still available to make your experience shine. That said, I’d recommend a few visual essentials for now. Sorry, no combat overhaul here.
Witcher font size change
The number one thing I would recommend if you’ve been playing The Witcher in the last decade is install a mod for your fonts. I play on her 2560×1440 monitor and she has a worse prescription for corrective eyes than your mother, so the original Witcher game’s tiny serif font is literally a pain.
my personal favorite is The higher the resolution, the larger the font size. yeah, that’s exactly what it does. There are a few variations, but “Balanced Text Size” is my preference as it maintains the feel of the original while making everything from quest logs to subtitles to hover effects easier to read.
My second favorite choice is The Witcher 3 UI Fonts This is also true. This swaps the original Witcher’s font for the Witcher 3’s sans-serif legible option. Honestly, parts of the interface feel a little memey, but for those who really need readability, it’s probably an excellent choice.
The Witcher Texture Mod
The second visual upgrade most people want is higher resolution textures. When it comes to The Witcher, I found that the slight gain in high-res textures didn’t improve the experience much. In a way, you’re sitting in a huge open room.
The Witcher Textured Mod has been around for over a decade and is a popular choice for sharpening environment, animal and armor textures. However, it doesn’t handle character models, so it needs to be paired. Witcher high resolution character modelMuch like the environment, I personally found the extra pixels not doing much to obscure the Witcher era when all faces were still shaping up. soOr there is a new AI luxury textures A mod that upscales the resolution of both characters and environments.
witcher tips
Apart from all the settings, there are a few things you should know about how The Witcher works. Sometimes the tutorial doesn’t explain certain details, sometimes after 10 hours he doesn’t stumble on things until he forgets about that tutorial from hour one.
Basic, but save oftenThis is standard advice for old games, but seriously. The Witcher has an autosave, but you have to do a manual save (or a quicksave with F5) before any big fight, and he’ll have to save every hour regardless. I really don’t want to end up outside of a seemingly unwinnable boss fight, look back at my save slot, and remember that the last time I saved in town to meditate and make a potion was four hours ago.
The Witcher’s combat system is difficult
The Witcher is known for its particularly quirky sword combat system, which relies on precise timing of sword attacks to achieve combos. The game’s early tutorials omit important details. Emphasis on rhythm, not random. It’s meant to click and swing when you see the sword icon burning, following a recognizable rhythm.
After the tutorial, you’ll need to get used to the pace of your swings, as you’ll be battling glowing green barghest dogs with 3-swing combos over and over again. Oh, and if you’re slashing and missing your enemies over and over, switch your fighting style to Z for Strong or X for Fast.
Don’t forget to brew potions
When you start the witcher for the first time, choose a difficulty level and explain that normal difficulty doesn’t require you to use a lot of potions. I am skeptical of this advice. A well-prepared witcher is a witcher who is still breathing.
Even under normal conditions, you may encounter tough fights that benefit from health regeneration and other effects. Use oil on swords that provide damage buffs against certain enemy types whenever you know what you’re fighting. Always keep an owl (to give signs) on hand, and restock with more specialized items such as cat potion for night vision when needed.
read your book
Speaking of specialty potions, don’t forget to right-click and read all the books in your inventory. It’s easy to ignore them by accident. Some will be looted potion recipes. Others are beast information required for certain contracts and quests. Check out merchants for new books while you shop too.
day and night
The Witcher explains its day and night system, but wondering why nothing happens when you’re where the quest markers indicate, until you suddenly reach one of a few specific quests. You may have forgotten how important it is. Check the quest details to make sure no time of day is mentioned, go to an inn or a fire to meditate, and go through time faster if you need to. Also, make sure you’re not exploring Vizima only at night, as some quests can only be started at certain times of the day (there are some in Chapter 2).
Don’t Miss These Quests
Witcher quest logs are very helpful, but there are some quests that are easy to miss throughout the story. Some are not actually added to the quest log when expected, others are locked out by doing quests in the wrong order.
king of the wild hunt
The Wild Hunt is a recurring theme in the Witcher series, and we learn early on that Geralt appears to continue to hold a brush with the King of the Hunt. You can’t miss it.
- Past Dead Hands: Given to you by Declan Leuvaarden at the Outskirts Inn in Chapter 1.
- Wild Hunt Hunting: Given by the Hermit in the Fields of Chapter 4.
monster trophy quest
The Witcher has 10 special Abbey trophy quests, two per chapter. The Royal Huntsman (and her two other characters) provide information about each, but usually not until they are added to the quest log. rear You killed them annoyingly. The main trophies you want to check are:
- Chapter 1: Nadir drowned near an old factory. Ozrel, Alghur in the basement.
- Chapter 2: A flying cockatrice in the Temple Quarter Sewers. A protospore called Coccasidium that spawns throughout swamps.
- Chapter 3: Volev the night wolf in the swamp. A royal wyvern moa near swampy wyvern island.
- Chapter 4: Teyu, a Vodianoi priest outside Marquee Waters. Semetaurus Ureus in the basement of the field.
- Chapter 5: Garkyne of Cemetery Island, Vesper. Lily of Bursa on Cemetery Island at night.
Boxing and Dice Quest
As in The Witcher 3, Geralt can fight through a series of increasingly difficult boxing matches. He’s easy to find since almost everything takes place in one tavern per chapter. What you might miss (albeit optional) is the first fight with Esquel in the prologue. After giving him a potion with Kaer Morhen, tell Triss he has more to do and go find Eskel in the armory.
There is no Gwent in the original Witcher game, but instead you can compete in dice poker. Loot dice in Outskirts He takes his box to Zoltan and he teaches the game. Throughout the game he must defeat 3 novice players, 4 pros and 3 keen players before challenging the reigning dice legend. Opponents are:
- beginner: Zoltan, Mikuru, Odo, Hasten Brogg, Elven Prisoner, Carmen, Vaska, Gardener.
- Professional: Thaler, Munro Bruys, Roderick de Wett, Velerad, Hierophant, Tobias Hoffman, Julian, The Hermit.
- sharp: Koster, Dandelion, Chiledan, Gambling Ghost.
- Legend: We met at the castle in Chapter 5.
Playing against 3 of the 4 Sharpers is the hardest thing to pull off. You can attempt a match with Koster in Chapter 3. The rest can be found in Chapter 4. If you trust Tris instead of Shani to take care of Alvin, the Gambling Ghost will specifically appear during the main quest in Chapter 4.
Other not-to-be-missed side quests
- Chapter 3: Complete Six Feet Under and Echo of Yesterday, then join the Posh Reception quest.
- Beauty and the Beast (Chapter 3): A classic witcher monster quest given by Carmen in Swamp Landing.
- Blue Eyes (Chapter 3): An investigation quest given by Patrick de Wise at the New Narracourt Inn.
- Temptation (Chapter 4): Another classic quest given by the Blacksmith’s Wife in Murky Waters.
- Green March (Chapter 5): A quest that does not appear in the log and is completed by speaking with an Elder Druid in the Swamp Graveyard Cave and exchanging items.
- Mud and Velvet (Chapter 5): Talk to Antoinette before leaving the castle or miss your chance for this quest.
