How To Play Baldur’s Gate 3 On Steam Deck

Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to release on August 3rd for PC and September 6th for PlayStation 5. Those of you who have the PC/Steam version may want to play with the Steam deck as well. However, it has not been fully verified as of this writing. That said, there are some kinks that need to be worked out. Our guide explains how to play Baldur’s Gate 3 with Steam decks, including any issues you may encounter.

How to Play Baldur’s Gate 3 with Steam Decks

Baldur’s Gate 3 promises a huge campaign lasting up to 100 hours. And it’s just a standard playthrough, not a completionist play trying to discover all the consequences and secrets. You probably don’t want to spend all your time sitting in front of your computer. Still, if you have a Steam deck and are looking to try out the handheld gaming option, here’s what you need to know.

Equipped with larger internal storage or MicroSD card

First things first: Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game. Not only because of its story and options, but also because of its whopping 80.46 GB install size at the time of this writing.

The 64 GB cheapest version isn’t enough. Therefore, we recommend choosing the 256 GB or 512 GB variant. Alternatively, you can use a microSD card to get more space.

Vulkan causes crashes, please run the game once with DirectX 11 enabled

Baldur’s Gate 3 will install straight into your Steam deck (no, you don’t need to change your Proton compatibility settings). However, there are some caveats.

• Starting the game will open the Larian Launcher. As you move the cursor, it may disappear or reset. Try moving the cursor using the right thumbstick and pressing the right trigger/RT on “start”.
• The default option is Vulkan. This caused the game to crash when I first started it.
• Make sure to switch to DirectX 11 before moving the cursor to[再生]Hover over the button and press RT.

Skip launcher completely

After one run of the game with DX11 enabled, you can close it. Then do the following:

• Select the game again and click the gear icon on the right side of the panel.
• Select Properties.
• [全般]tab,[起動オプション]Scroll down until you see
• In the text box enter: –skip-launcher

Skip the Larian Launcher the next time you play the game. In other words, no more hassle of manipulating the cursor. Additionally, DX11 will be the default option.

Your Steam Deck is now ready to play Baldur’s Gate 3! However, you have to consider the handheld’s battery life.So, if necessary, in the main menu[オプション]->[ビデオ]and make the following changes to improve battery life:

• Resolution: 1280×800
• Vertical Sync: Off
• Framerate Cap: Enabled. 30fps.
• Overall Preset: Medium
• Shadow Quality: Low
• Cloud Quality: Low

Comparing Default Controls with Mouse and Keyboard

Finally, it’s worth noting that proper controls are not yet fully implemented. For example, choosing commands can feel awkward or you can’t rotate the camera. By default, the right thumbstick can be used to move the cursor and the right trigger/RT can be used to click something (command, enemy or location). This also applies to interactive responses, since you must press RT to select a response.

We recommend that you try setting up a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. It doesn’t lead to a pure handheld experience, but the controls remind me of what you’d expect if you were playing on PC.
