We regularly post galleries of major cosplay shows, and they are always betterbut at the recent New York Comic Con, one photographer wanted to do something a little different.
A veteran who not only wants to take great pictures, but also wants to take on new challenges photographer Andrew Boyle (Disclaimer: I wrote the preface to his book) wanted to make a cosplayer for this year’s show.the sole focus of his work ”.
“After my cosplay photobook Heroes & Villains came out in 2017, I thought I was going to loosen up the theme a bit, but I kept getting pulled back. “I shoot in a uniform style inspired by Richard Avedon’s portraits, so I focus only on the subject without the distraction of the background.”
“I’ve also been working on collage work and motion, and wanted to integrate a unique handcrafted feel into each subject I chose. Some used clippings that referenced characters, others used repeating shapes, and color his blocking with paper and textures. This is a way to set ourselves apart from other cosplay photos that have a unique approach, and get a different feel to celebrate all the hard work and energy that the NYCC crowd brings. I love reading the reactions of people who have seen it. “
The result is a highly stylized gallery that lets each cosplayer, costume, and performance shine by removing the usual convention backdrop.
