“The Legend of Zelda: Kingdom of Tears” is pretty scary.
By the same token, I’m not saying Majora’s Mask is unsettling for its entire run, and there certainly aren’t any moments like that. or cutscene at Twilight Princess. But even though I’m ridiculously overwhelmed and heart-filled, Tears of the Kingdom still excites me more than any other Zelda game.
Hyrule in Breath of the Wild was a barren and desolate place. Perhaps the first real danger many of us encountered was being swarmed by Guardians trying to get to Hyrule Castle.now or It was pretty scary. The music of the piano and the sound of the seeker robot beeping as it locks on is imprinted on my mind.
Tears of the Kingdom give you a false sense of security. The first place on the surface you visit is Hyrule Fields, which is completely different and no longer inhabited by these highly dangerous creations. You’ll find Bokoblins and Moblins here and there, but that’s it. Except for the Hyrule Castle hovering behind Lookout Landing and the copious amounts of red and black oozing from the ground. and all caves. And that immense helplessness reached 20.
Here’s a quick note — I’ll go into more detail later Gameplay spoilers are herealmost just enemy and place what remains in my heart. I don’t touch the story at all. But if you don’t want to spoil the wonder (or horror) of this world, feel free to hurry and leave…

horrible lot
My overconfidence was exposed by not paragliding on Ozorajima. I quickly got used to the controls, but every time I faced a gap that I thought I could paraglider over, I couldn’t. You might think I would have learned not to jump ledges blindly, but I didn’t. Obtained Paragliding, I was straight down through every cave, crevice, and hole I could find. What a mistake!
Tears of the Kingdom lets you discover the wonders of the world at your own pace, but that also means you’ll encounter the horrors of Hyrule at the same time. And when you do, the game isn’t really in your hands.
Horiburin is terrifying. It is very disturbing to see them crawling on the ceiling, running around trying to get close to them, and making strange noises. When I first encountered it, I was just roaming around in caves and breaking rocks when this large creature trotted toward me. They had their weapons glued together and their hideouts littered with scraps of meat. I don’t want to know what they were doing, but I was really surprised. I hate the moaning noises they make when they walk into a room, especially when he fights five black he horibrins at the same time.

i don’t like i like
One of the “upgraded” series creatures is Like Like. They were weird enough in Ocarina of Time, but who expected them to be as big as in Tears of the Kingdom? , I gasped loudly when I met these long creatures. They make horrible noises as if they are preparing a feast and I am never happy to see that.
Other terrifying creatures lurk on the surface of Hyrule, but they are ready and waiting for you outside. Meeting a Greek for the first time feels like an event – at least for me. In the Tavantha Tundra, I was sneaking past the Frost Greeks. The Frost Greek flitted proudly around the ruins in the middle of the field. I failed and started running as the creepy music started. Before I knew it, I was hit by an ice beam and died in one hit.

With three heads, each with one eye, looking down at me from the sky, the Greeks make me nervous in a way the Guardian never did. I enjoy their challenges now, but their sheer size and ferocity are enough to make me doubt myself, especially if I come across the strongest subspecies. The Thunder Greeks of the Coliseum and the Flame Greeks of Hylian Bridge are particularly harrowing. Areas with restricted ground movement require you to think on the fly, and when a three-headed three-eyed dragon challenges you, it won’t be easy to kill you.
darkness and fate
I mentioned melancholy above, but this substance is basically the answer to all my nightmares in Tears of the Kingdom.
The first time I entered the depths, it was almost breathtaking. It’s an incredible area to get lost in for hours at a time. Hyrule’s underworld is engulfed in eternal darkness, only perpetually illuminated by the Lightroots you find when you haphazardly bypass the void and helplessly fling Lightbloom seeds ahead. Addictive, but made me feel incredibly claustrophobic for a long time.
Patches of darkness covering the ground and dark-infested monsters stronger than anything on the ground or in the air kill me in one or two hits. and A momentary robbery of the maximum number of hearts is enough to panic. I certainly did, abandoning all rational thoughts about whether I could fast travel from danger or retreat to the safe Surface. Instead, I decided to just die and not go back there until I was stronger.
Dispelling the darkness does not solve many of the horrors of the Depth. Phlox, a new type of enemy, can suck you in and quickly spit you out. They are like a reinforced subterranean Hinox, except that they are very fast and very large. Stalnox, Hinox, Gleeok and Flux Construct all have dark versions. All of this, combined with Depths’ oppressive music, somehow makes Tears of the Kingdom seem smaller than ever, despite the power at (and within) your fingertips. doing.
Raise your hand
I deliberately left the worst to the end because I don’t think anyone will ever forget their first encounter with the Groom Spawn (aka Groom Hands).
The first time I was outside was in broad daylight in a small forest gathering materials from the ground. I thought the Blood Moon was rising, but then I realized what time it was, and suddenly this big mass of darkness had five hands fighting to grab me. I have never run faster.

The distorted vocals and flowing music send chills down my spine, even as I fight these now, armed to the brim with bomb flowers and ice nuts. Like holibrins and phloxes, the speed with which these things move and the fact that they pick you up as if they were nothing. That feeling of restriction and panic is unparalleled in a Zelda game for me. And as for what happens when you defeat some Groomhands… well, have fun.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Hyrule, but strange and terrifying things continue to happen to me. The horse god Malanya is still a bit creepy, and I love the Stalahwerths, but seeing them in the depths was a little creepy. Let’s stop talking about height.
But in Tears of the Kingdom, surprise and terror combine to incredible effect. For every special thing you find, there’s bound to be something unsettling waiting for you somewhere. Always expect the unexpected.
