A playful adventure and an excellent voice cast power this Diablo-lite DC Comics adventure.
Justice League Cosmic Chaos is the DC superhero I didn’t know I needed. Publisher Outright Games’ latest installment continues to cement his position as one of the premier makers of licensed games for kids. Playing DC League of Super-Pets, My Friend Peppa Pig, and more with kids helps them guide developers to create friendly, approachable games that are fun to play across ages. I can personally assure you that. But the developer of Cosmic Chaos, who previously created a Starfox-esque League of Superpets game (and his eight-player local sports game Clusterpuck 99), his PHL Collective is Diablo-esque. We raised the bar with our take. Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman gameplay. This colorful cartoonish adventure is a blast and a bright spot in the world of comic video games overshadowed by the shaky future of game titles as a service like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. I’m here.
First, the voice cast is incredible, with a playable trio of Nolan North (previously playing Superman in LEGO content) and Vanessa Marshall (previously Wonder Woman in the HBO Max show Harley Quinn). ), Diedrich Bader (who played Batman in the underrated Batman: The Brave and the Bold comics, among other retributions). A pleasant surprise for me was Dana Snyder (Master Shake of Aqua Teen Hunger Force) as his Mr. Mxyzptlk who brings the perfect energy to the goofy villain (note: the late Gilbert Gottfried did not like the character he brought to life). I was planning on playing it again). Superman: The Animated Series, but he died before he died. The game is dedicated to his memory and also includes recently deceased comic artists Neil Adams, Alan Grant, George Perez and Tim Sale. It is the same). This story in which Mxy claims Happy He’s the mayor of Harbor is a refreshing goofball. The other Justice members of his League are taken over by Starro in his control of the Mind, and a team of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman save the day.
The main story is only available in single player and you can switch between 3 characters on the fly. They have repeatable basic attacks and evasions, as well as various secondary and special abilities. The latter ability resides in a timer that recharges after use, even when you’re not controlling a character. Constantly swapping characters is a great way to unleash different powers while recharging. Additionally, elemental affinities come into play later in the game, so Superman’s heat vision can quickly melt ice enemies. There are skill trees that can be upgraded. Beyond that, each hero can have three accessories that further enhance their powers. Oh, Justice can summon them to help him when rescuing members of his League. It’s repetitive over time, especially since the enemy types thin out a bit, but the game consistently offers enough new twists on what you can do to keep it fresh.
Beyond Mxy’s plot, it’s packed with side quests featuring countless DC villains. Happy Harbor isn’t a very big world, but there are more distractions out there than you first expected. Sometimes it moves to an underground base, other times it moves to Wonder Woman’s home, Themyscira. The references go deeper, especially with the fun unlockable costumes: collect all the comic books to unlock Matches his Malone his Batman doppy costume, Trippy Batman his Zuen his Earl costume and more can.
It’s a bit of a shame that the main story isn’t multiplayer, but Cosmic Chaos has a really cool mode called Instant Action that allows two players to jump right into the fray. As someone who has long been frustrated by multiplayer games requiring long lead times to get to actual multiplayer (looking at you here, Secret of Mana), this is a welcome addition . It also extends the life a little more beyond the already pretty story mode. It works well enough, but if you come here looking for a graphical showcase, you’ll be disappointed. For example, virtuoso voice acting performances from our list of greats and animated cutscenes that give us a glimpse of what this game might look like on better hardware.
If you’re looking for a DC superhero game that relies more on arcade gameplay, whimsical callbacks, and a playful vibe, Justice League Cosmic Chaos is great. Wandering around Happy Harbor distracted by side quests and cooperating with kids in smart instant action mode, I enjoyed this. We hope this will usher in a new era of licensed games for players.
