When High On Life took the stage at this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live show, I was reminded that there aren’t enough shooters trying to make us laugh. They’re very serious, and not just competitive multiplayer stuff! It is rare to see a game that is played with the inherent absurdity of this.
Justin Roiland and the folks at Squanch Games are creating a rare comedy FPS that’s arguably the work of the creators of Rick and Morty. Your guns are aliens who talk incessantly about neurotic worries and violent fantasies. ending.
I think it’s a great idea for a game, but I can understand why it makes some people cringe. I was a little exhausted from Sanchez’s chatter. Sichuan sauce incident (opens in new tab) It shows how annoying the show’s fan base is and it’s become fashionable to hate Rick and Morty. We’ve yet to see a character in the role of an euphoric nihilist, but the whole Roiland thing hasn’t changed much in High on Life.
High On Life was immediately met with negative reactions due to its similarities to Rick and Morty. gamescom trailer (opens in new tab) on my social feed. There was also a voice saying, “It’s painful to watch.” I think that trailer went too far.Three minutes of Morty pistol denying the boss you’re fighting is exhausting, even if he has funny jabs like “I’ll admit it, we’re hurting you!” I was not convinced until I saw this 25 minute gameplay demo (opens in new tab) Shared by IGN a few days later.
A longer video shows a condensed version of the early mission. The essence of the game seems to be about hunting down bounty hunter targets and finding new gun alien allies along the way. For a reason, Morty Pistol does all the dialogue (perhaps he’s translating to the way the aliens speak?).
This was the first time that I was able to realize the goodness of High On Life. The alien design is fun, funky and gross. Firing the Morty Pistol’s secondary grenade through the “Trick Hole” causes the entire gun to flutter like wet noodles for a moment. Not to mention that every line coming out of the gun’s mouth is incredibly animated and lip-synced. This is not a budget game.
Much like Rick and Morty, not all High On Life gags hit me, but the ones that did still make me smile a day later. I laughed so hard at the kid who dared to shoot me. The Morty gun initially refuses to fire when the trigger is pulled, but eventually gives in. Are you happy now? The child is dead. It has an E for Everyone rating.” On speaking to his mother a little later, she confirms that he was in fact thirty years old (their Still adolescent for the species, but “not bad enough to kill a 5-year-old”).
A few other small lines also worked pretty well. Telling him to kill two alien bugs He suddenly shoots one of his guards, another one of him reacts in shock, “Hey, you killed Jason!” . Sometimes when I’m beating up virtual villains in video games, I think about what people with names, careers, and loving families mean. High On Life but mostly pushy NPCs in e.g. Last of Us 2 that too Realistic.
And of course there are knives that are only interested in cutting things. (opens in new tab) and eat their buttholes. Naifuni probably punched his pie hole too many times during the mission, but I still laughed at one of his intros against the bug guard in the room. Make it the size of a
If this demo turns out to be what High On Life is all about (earning bounties, talking to aliens, shooting other aliens, fighting bosses), I think you’ll be satisfied. Shooting looks pretty slick, and with just enough Doom 2016 going on with Knifey’s glory kill run and grapple hook mode, Squanch is interested in making a good shooter on top of all the jokes I’m sure. Unlike many Gamescom games unveiled this week, High On Life was released this year. Coming to consoles and PC on December 13th.
