For years, LEGO games have maintained a reputation for quality, children’s titles that players of all ages can enjoy. From classics like LEGO Star Wars to his more recent LEGO Builder’s Journey, few of his latest LEGO games can be said to be completely bad. That means, until LEGO Brawls releases on consoles, it creates an embarrassing stain on an otherwise consistent catalog.
First released for Apple Arcade on mobile devices in 2019, LEGO Bawls is a fighting game in the loosest of terms. There is only one attack button, and two temporary power-ups can be picked up from item boxes in the stage. Matches are primarily played in a 4v4 King of the Hill format, where teams must dominate a specific area for a period of time. Despite being the main mode, this mode devolves into an ignorant, button-mashing slogan that even kids can’t enjoy. can sometimes fly off on random hits. Plus, the AI ââis so poor that you’re more likely to win just by putting your controller down and standing still.
Other types of matches include 8-player battle royale and 15-kill-first matches, but due to the nature of the game, there are too many modes to enjoy. Also, with no discernible sound effects and voices, you may not know where your character is until the match is over.
The main attraction of LEGO Brawls is definitely its character creator. He has over 77 billion weapon and outfit combinations to build, and while that number sounds insane, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to see all the options available in the game. Customization parts are unlocked one at a time by winning matches or gaining experience in a battle pass-style system.
LEGO Brawls feels like an insult to LEGO fans after the fantastic LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga released earlier this year. From the awful core gameplay to the incredibly painstaking unlocking system, there’s very little you can redeem for this package. If you’re serious about building your own minifigures, most of his LEGO games already have their own character, his creator. Your time and money are best spent elsewhere.
