Hardware announcements have been all over the place lately, with many products being demoed during, around, and after the Gamescom celebration. With a line-up like Hyper X’s all-new line of gaming monitors (opens in new tab) And this crazy curved screen on the Corsair (opens in new tab) Gamer-targeted monitors see a ton of hype (opens in new tab).
One of the latest to be announced is the LG UltraGear 240Hz curved OLED screen. It will be unveiled in just a few days at his IFA, a computing and gaming exhibition in Germany. What’s a little different about this screen, though, is that it uses the same weird curved panel as the new Corsair monitors, but without the flat-to-curve potential.
Until you see it in action, Corsair’s Xeneon Flex (opens in new tab) All monitors can turn out to be gimmicks. It’s hard to say how constantly changing monitors would actually work, but it’s definitely a great idea.I’m curious about the general specs of the Xeneon and not too worried about the bent screen. If so, LG’s UltraGear is worth considering.
It has a wide aspect ratio of 21:9 with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 on a 45-inch screen with a refresh rate of 240Hz, so it is clearly aimed at gamers rather than graphic design. And with the 800R’s massive curvature all around you, it could be a great choice for things like racing sims. Additionally, the OLED screen combined with the high contrast ratio should make for a great looking scene.
Also, it’s fair to say that some gamers aren’t too impressed with these modern panels. We wanted resolution. Without seeing first hand how they run, we can’t guess much.
Additionally, although not very common at the moment, newer graphics cards may support DisplayPort 2.0. (opens in new tab) These monitors still only work with 1.4. It won’t be a problem for most people looking to add a screen to their existing kit, but for those looking to upgrade in the near future, the DP 2.0 is worth considering. (opens in new tab).
I’m withholding judgment on the LG UltraGear until I get a chance to go hands-on. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet either, but we don’t expect this monitor to be very cheap.
