when the original Dead Space Released in 2008, it deftly blended sci-fi and horror elements to offer a unique experience. It quickly became a classic around the world and is now considered one of the greatest survival horror games of all time. Combining haunting vocals with chilling horror scenes, the trailer perfectly captured the atmosphere of the game. The trailer introduced her USG Ishimura, a mining ship destined to serve as the game’s main setting. It was such an inspiring and memorable introduction that fans instantly fell in love with it.
Over ten years later, our team started work on the remake. As part of that process, it’s no surprise that we spent a lot of time researching the original game. We also reviewed all the media surrounding it to use as a reference. The trailer was playing on loop frequently in the background on another computer while I was at work…and the eerie rendition of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” started to pop into my head.
Then, after announcing the game, I started seeing fans posting online how cool it would be if the trailer was revisited for the remake.after a long time Dead Space Being a fan myself, I knew I could make this happen. So after production wrapped, I decided to grab some footage and make an updated version of the Lullaby trailer as a surprise for the rest of the team. And as soon as they saw what I was working on, the rest of the team were more than happy to help.
We worked hard to capture all the shots we needed, but it wasn’t as easy as you might think. For one, it was intended to be an exact 1:1 copy of the original, but many of the shots in the original trailer were actually captured from the USM Valor section of the game, not Ishimura. Since it is the main setting of the game, we wanted to make sure all footage was of Ishimura, so we decided to use shots that matched the original composition and subject matter, but changed locations as needed. Did. (actually still one quick shot courage; see if you can find it! )
The hardest part, though, was all the necromorph attacks. Some footage only appears on screen for a fraction of a second, so trying to capture the exact same scene with proper lighting and clear composition was a challenge! Let’s just say that. Olivier Asselin, the game’s audio director, stepped in to update the trailer’s audio with our own vocal recording, perfecting the chaotic cacophony of instruments that accompany the jump cut.
