All proceeds will go to Ukrainian aircraft reconstruction work.
as part of Microsoft Flight SimulatorWith our ongoing digital preservation efforts, we are pleased to present today the world’s largest aircraft, the Ukrainian-made Antonov An-225 Mriya. It is a six-engine, super-heavy-lift jet transport that holds many size-related aviation records, including the record for being the world’s longest aircraft. Only one of his Mriyas was completed, catastrophically inoperable in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Attempts to rebuild the aircraft and fly it again are underway.
Using the An-124 Ruslan as a design basis, in 1985 Antonov “Mk. 401.” could carry up to 225 tons of cargo, hence the name An-225. As well as being much larger than the An-124, the Mriya (“dream” in Ukrainian) was powered by the same power source as Ruslan, his six turbofan engines. As a further difference from the An-124, the An-225’s tail had a different shape than its smaller predecessor. Instead of one large vertical stabilizer, the An-225 was designed with two horizontal stabilizers, one at each end. This design is dictated by the aerodynamics of carrying heavy loads on top of the fuselage. The landing gear was also enlarged from that of the An-124. Mriya had a total of 32 wheels and the rearmost section of the main landing gear assembly was rotatable.
Two An-225s were planned for production, but only one Antonov was completed. It made its maiden flight on December 21, 1988, officially becoming the heaviest aircraft of all time. During his subsequent March 22, 1989 flight, AN-225 set his 110th world record at once. This is a record in itself.
A few months later, the plane arrived at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where technicians installed the Buran Orbiter into the upper fuselage. And on June 9, 1989, the crowd at the Paris Air Show was stunned by the sight of his An-225, which was huge. Blanc was the first plane to fly on top of that foam, through the clouds, and over the Eiffel Tower. landing.
Unfortunately, on February 27, 2022, Mriya was taken out of service after being attacked during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The tentative plan is to take Mriya back into the air by piecing together parts of the destroyed An-225 and parts of the unfinished airframe.
The An-225 is 275 feet 7 inches long (longer than the first flight of the Light Flyer), 59 feet 5 inches tall and has a wingspan of 290 feet. Powered by six Progress D-18T high-bypass turbofan engines, each developing 51,600 pounds of thrust and capable of carrying up to 559,580 pounds (253.8 tons), his maximum takeoff weight is 1,410,958 pounds. It has a range of 9,600 miles, a maximum range of 36,000 feet, cruises at 500 miles per hour, and reaches a top speed of 530 miles per hour.
The An-225 Mriya has 6 liveries.
