Ready, aim, fire, fire, fire.
Missile Command: Recharged is the latest installment in Atari’s classic arcade re-release series with a more modern polish. The gameplay is largely the same, but the updated presentation, challenge stages, and online leaderboards will make fans of the original want to return to the commander’s chair and use his missile turrets to protect as many cities as possible. It is a special case.
In endless arcade mode, you can aim for a high score while defending your city and turrets against missiles using 3 turret detonating counter missiles. You’ll also have to deal with tanks, alien ships, and other new enemies in this recharge version. Luckily, power-ups can be activated by periodically traversing the screen and shooting them. These slow down time, speed up shots, give extra firepower, or create giant bombs that nearly fill the screen. It’s just as much fun as when the original hit the arcades a while ago.
The 32 challenge levels on offer have tweaked the formula to make each one worth experiencing, but unfortunately you’ll need to complete the available ones to unlock more. There is. The thread that basically ties all these levels together is that the turrets only have a set number of bullets. Other wrinkles include certain projectile and enemy types, certain power-ups that appear in abundance, and even boss fights. It’s nice to have your own score in. What’s great is that both the challenge and arcade modes can be played with a partner.
If you’re wondering why Missile Command: Recharged has two separate reviews (2020 and 2022), it’s because the title has been updated with new visuals and the aforementioned challenge stages. The 2022 release also comes with a price hike (2020 version owners can upgrade for a small fee), but the core gameplay remains solid and the revamped look makes him look like his 2020 original. Definitely more appealing than the Recharged version of. The added content and updated visuals are a rocket boost for the package, and the challenges with cumulative leaderboards are a bit of a dud. If you’ve enjoyed , the ‘2.0’ version of Missile Command: Recharged will almost certainly hit the spot. If you haven’t bothered with previous iterations of this missile defense simulator, there may not be enough here to shake you up.
