Call of Duty claims it’s never had better weapon unlocks than the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot. The way the first iteration of Gunsmith balanced attachments and subtle stat changes, balanced with barrel deformation effects, matches me in a way Black Ops-Cold War and Vanguard haven’t matched since. did. In Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward is blowing Create-a-Class once again with Gunsmith 2.0.
In Gunsmith 2.0, players not only unlock new attachments for their weapons, but new receivers that literally transform one gun into another. That’s right, the tech tree.
Infinity Ward explained the new system. video (opens in new tab) Shared on Infinity Ward’s Twitter. Using the M4 as an example, the developer removes the standard his M4’s entire front his receiver (i.e. it’s basically all mounted inside the middle) and replaces it with the M16’s receiver I showed you how. M4 must be progressed before unlocking the M16 receiver, which can progress to either the SMG receiver or the DMR variant.
This is a big change from how Call of Duty has handled progression over the past decade. Gun unlocks are usually tied to account-wide levels. Variants are tied to the weapon’s XP, as is still the case with “base” guns like the M4. For example, I imagine the standard AK-47 will eventually evolve into his AK-74U SMG. Infinity Ward says the change is intended to more closely mimic the modularity of real guns, but the gun tech tree also has some cool bonuses.
Senior User Experience Designer Mary Evdjukian said: As someone who’s probably unlocked the same basic red dot sight on hundreds of her CoD guns over the years, it’s nice to have less confusion.
