The king finally abdicated. A problematic YouTube favorite, his Pewdiepie is no longer the most-subscribed streamer on the platform. The title is currently held by Jimmy Donaldson, better known to his millions of YouTube viewers as his MrBeast.

And in the early hours of November 15, he officially surpassed Pewdiepie with his 112 million subscribers on his YouTube page.
His rapid subscriber growth is no doubt driven in part by his extravagant ways with his audience. These are big budget productions. For example, in the Grass Circle video, MrBeast gave the contestant a donkey house fully stocked with supplies to live in, and then proceeded to tear it down (and many other bizarre, expensive stunts) in the man’s life. just to make the more miserable. They’re fun to watch, and a stark contrast to Pewdiepie’s video style where he basically plays the game, talks whatever comes to his mind in the moment, and occasionally yells.
PewDiePie is still hugely popular, so MrBeast’s arrival isn’t necessarily the end of an era, but we can’t help but see the changing of the guard here. Pewdiepie is a personality, MrBeast is an event. He’s basically a reality TV production studio with a budget big enough to convince people to be silly (that is, interesting) on camera. For example, in November 2021, he was criticized for spending $3.5 million on his Squid Game reality reenactment. (opens in new tab)a Netflix show about the super-rich preying on the poor, and, more to the point, a critique of economic inequality and the failure of capitalism.
But the flip side of that coin is that Squid Game has been hugely successful. MrBeast’s video also has more than 303.5 million views, one year after he posted it. While name recognition obviously plays a big part in its success, so does the simple fact that MrBeast’s work is far more mainstream and accessible than what his Pewdiepie has to offer. There’s no way my mom will see Pews hold up to anything, but she might see her Hide and Seek in $60,000 Extreme.
His extravagant ways are well-known for being referenced in a recent Scott Seiss video.

What was a little unexpected was that PewDiePie said in August that he was ready to relinquish his crown. “Well, I’ve been retired for about two years now,” he said. Q&A video (opens in new tab)admits that MrBeast will “definitely” surpass his subscriber count.
PewDiePie announced he was “retiring” in 2020, but he’s actually slowing down even more. I’m still posting videos and getting subscribers. Dexert (opens in new tab) It was 107 million at the time and continues to grow as well.
