Warner Bros. Character Brawler MultiVersus (opens in new tab)It has taken the industry by storm since it hit open beta last month. However, the scale of its popularity was recently confirmed by the analytical group NPD. report (opens in new tab) Multiversus was last month’s best-selling video game, even though it only hit Steam on the 19th.
MultiVersus is a free-to-play game, but in addition to in-game microtransactions, Warner Bros. also sells a series of Founder’s Packs for the game. This provides players with “character tickets” that are used to unlock fighters. It seems that these Founder’s Packs propelled MultiVersus to the top of the sales charts.
MultiVersus’ success knocked out Elden Ring (opens in new tab)It’s the second time this year that FromSoftware’s fantasy phenomenon has missed the top spot. The big RPG has maintained overall sales for the year, but Namco Bandai reports that the game has sold around 17 million units. (opens in new tab) Since its launch in February.
These rankings have one important caveat. While NPD’s charts take into account both physical and digital sales of most games, digital sales of two Nintendo titles on the list, namely Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and the perpetually popular Mario Kart 8, are not registered. It also doesn’t track the Xbox and digital sales of MLB: The Show 22, which ranked No. 6.
