New images for Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster

Light and shadow never fade, they just get remastered

One of the games I’m most excited to play on Nintendo’s powerful new Switch 2 system was originally released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. That’s not a knock on the Switch 2 launch-day lineup, but rather a nod towards the quality of Bravely Default.

Just how good was it on the 3DS? Pure Nintendo reviewed its eventual U.S. release in 2014, and gave it a 10/10. Reviewer Thomas Jones stated, “Bravely Default is a wonderful concoction of both old and new, maintaining everything loved by the classic Final Fantasy games whilst adding enough fresh new features and mechanics that could ultimately result in Bravely becoming Square Enix’s new trump card. Bravely Default’s luscious visuals, rich cultural sounds, colourful cast of characters and addictive gameplay all culminate to produce one of the best RPGs not only from Square Enix, but from any publisher in recent years.”

The closing of the 3DS eShop made it hard for JRPG fans to play through the adventure, but there are also complications with the physical cartridge; some important gameplay elements were tied into StreetPass, making progression difficult in an already challenging game. The HD Remaster is not only addressing the lack of StreetPass, but adding new mini-games to fill the gap: Luxencheer Rhythm Catch and Ringabel’s Panic Cruise. Both games take advantage of the new Joy-Con mouse controls.

Of course, players can also look forward to enhanced visuals. Although the wonderful 3D display of the game’s lush settings will be lost, the remastered visuals should make up for that if these artwork samples are indication.

And, of course, let’s not forget the game’s job-based battle system and the wonderful costume changes that that entails.

All of this considered, the Switch 2 release of Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster looks to be a great way for those who missed the original to finally play through, as well as a chance for many of us to enjoy it again.
