Zac Efron’s fire starter It caught a lot of hell in early 2022 for being a crappy remake of Stephen King’s book-to-movie adaptation that wasn’t all that great to begin with. Children of the Corn Franchise is even worse. This is his 11th film and second remake, based on his 1977 short story of King sacrificing his parents to appease a pagan corn god in rural Nebraska. It depicts a murderous cult of children. And although it’s not the worst movie The competition is so weak that franchises have to offer.
up to date corn children Journeyman type Curt Wimmer takes command, total recall and breakthrough Remake and final outing as director ultraviolet rays It dates back to 2006. Children of the Corn, especially a franchise the notable filmmakers have never belonged to. Wimmer’s direction is competent enough, with little touches of style here and there. But with a script this bad, there’s not much you can do to save the movie. And Wimmer wrote it too, so he’s not to blame but himself.
This is a name only remake. corn children In the name of “he who walks behind the line,” it maintains the concept of children rising up and killing their parents, discarding pretty much everything else. Wimmer’s first big mistake was deleting his POV outside of King in the story. A grown-up couple is trying to figure out what went wrong in a deserted town in Nebraska. He replaces them with a high school senior named Boleyn Williams (Elena Kampouris). Boleyn is about to move out of the small town of Lilstone, Nebraska and head off to college soon. She wants to study environmental science and help Rylstone recover from a series of crop failures caused by genetically modified corn. Then everything falls apart.

Boleyn is both an insider and an outsider. Because she’s her Rylstone child, the 12-year-old psychopath she’s safe from a scheme hatched by Eden (Kate Moyer) to slaughter all the adults in town. (All those “reasons” are saved at the end of the movie, worthy of a groan when it’s revealed.) Boleyn objects to the plan. Until it’s too late, she believes a peaceful solution is needed to the conflict between the town’s brawling adults and children. I am eager to bulldoze my corn and move to Florida. Bloodthirsty children… don’t want to do that. (Again, the “why” is elusive and ridiculous.)
Campoulis does his best with horror movie emotes as the plot deepens, but once the story kicks in, Wimmer doesn’t know what to do with Boleyn. That means she spends much of the movie standing in terror, which isn’t really the case. Are doing anything more. The same applies to her father, Robert (Captain America: Winter Soldier‘s Callan Mulvey) raises his hand and declares that nothing can be done about Rylstone’s destruction, which makes his character irrelevant to the rest of the film.
A more successful recast comes in the form of 14-year-old Moyer, who steals the show as the female version of the original film’s preteen preacher Isaac. A little joker in the character’s sense, with added shades of genocidal dictator and murderous cult leader. ‘s hammy delivery sucks – in fact, it’s the only really fun thing about this picture.
an area corn children The decision to remain inexplicably true to the original source material lies in his portrayal of him walking behind a column, briefly described in the short story as a red glowing green human-plant hybrid. Wimmer executes on this idea, overloading the second half of the film with unconvincing CGI effects. (One scene straight up is a rip off king kong, For him to jump out of the corn and catch a woman bound to a cross.) We see more of this cornstalk scarecrow monster than we should.

If corn children It could have been a little fun, as it was nothing more than a brainless hybrid of a creature feature and a killer kids movie. What really lets this remake down is the fact that Wimmer sets up so many socio-political themes that he doesn’t follow up, raising the question of whether he stumbled upon them by chance. The clash between kids and parents is so important at a time when Gen Z is making headlines for its climate activism. This film alludes to that connection and drops it. By rationalizing their actions step-by-step, Eden and her followers resemble how ordinary people become fascists in real life. Wimmer isn’t into that subject either.
It’s frustrating and we can’t blame these mistakes on incompetence rather than indifference corn children Makes sitting more enjoyable. When you see what a movie can be, it catches fire in the middle and escapes into a dry cornfield… no thought provoked, no emotion evoked. More than anything, it’s terrifying. “Nothing dies in the corn,” explains one child to another, before slaughtering each other in the opening scene. Maybe it’s time for this franchise to change that.
corn children It will debut in theaters on March 3rd and will be available on digital outlets such as: Amazon and budu March 21st.
