Nuclear Blaze is a 2D pixel platformer for firefighting from Dead Cells lead developer and game designer Sebastien Benard. As a firefighter, you are tasked with extinguishing an out-of-control forest hell, but while doing so you come across a mysterious military facility and head inside to uncover the source of the raging flames.
The entire campaign lasts just over an hour and spans various facility areas that must be extinguished in order to progress. This involves aiming the hose with the analog stick and pressing the square to spray water. This one is our favourite! Some areas have sprinklers that you can switch on and on and locked doors that block your path, collect a key or swipe a card to continue It’s all very simple gameplay and the only new mechanics added throughout are dodge rolling and armor, neither of which can change things significantly and lacks variety .
Nuclear Blaze does a great job of being accessible for all ages, as you can adjust the speed of the fire spread and the strength of the hose on the fly throughout the game. There’s even a dedicated kids mode that’s easy for 3-year-olds to navigate, and with invincibility, auto-jump, and auto-aim enabled, you can focus on saving the furry feline from the flames. On the other side of the scale is the Hold My Beer mode. This is a more intense experience with additional military turrets and faster fire spread to keep you on your toes.
Nuclear Blaze is a fun pixel platformer that gets all the basics right, but lacks any meaningful depth to get you hooked. Its wide range of difficulty options can be commended for making it accessible to all, but its incredibly short running time makes it a very passable experience.
