valve classic Portal It was recently re-released on Steam with some very fancy new visuals such as ray tracing and DLSS support.that was great news Portal Good news not only for fans, but also for fans of old PC games of all kinds.
Before we go any further, let me explain the technology we are talking about. RTX is the name given to a suite of technologies used by graphics card company Nvidia to make PC games very simply awesome using “ray tracing and AI technology”.Click here for the trailer Portal with RTXis a re-release of a game made with this technology, showing improvements made to a game I remember back in 2007 as being very similar.
Now, the problem with RTX is that in this case (and earthquake When Mine Craft) it had to be put into the game by the developers, but Nvidia is also releasing a version of the tech with modders in mind.
On RTX Remix, the game runs in the background, replacing the old rendering API and system with RTX Remix’s 64-bit Vulkan renderer. This makes it possible to add ray tracing to traditional games, with everything updating in real time as lights and objects move. Light can be cast from behind the player or from another room. Portal with RTX, light can even pass through portals. Glass refracts light, surfaces reflect details based on their sheen, cast reflections into the scene from behind the player, objects self-reflect, and indirect lighting from off-screen to see affect things.
compared to Quake II RTX When Minecraft with RTXIntroduced by , RTX Remix, Path Tracing Ray Tracing is even more advanced, bouncing light four times instead of once, improving the quality, immersion, and simulation of real-world light. Additionally, we’ve introduced several new ray tracing techniques that further improve quality while boosting performance.
Nvidia says RTX Remix is a “modding platform” that “enables modders of all ability levels to bring ray tracing and NVIDIA technology to classic games.” Considering it won’t go on sale until 2023, I thought it was months away to see what benefits old games would bring, but no!
Modders like LordVulcan It turns out that we can add some RTX juice to some classic titles. In most cases, all you have to do is drop a few files from one folder to another on your hard drive. Enable some developer stuff in the console. that’s it.And it’s working on games like Swat 4 and the original Max Payne.
The results are not perfect, but At least compared to the months of professional work done on games like Mine Craft, they still look great! Here it is Max Paynefor example, Courtesy of Alex Coulter:
That lighting. their shadows. This is magic.
here are some footage Swat 4 Filmed by Eiermann Televisionreleased in 2005, And it definitely didn’t look like this at the time:
And here’s a quick rundown of Half-Life 1 and how it all happened.
None of these examples are perfect, but considering how quickly they were implemented, it’s amazing how well they work. This is going to be really great when his real RTX Remix comes out in 2023, but until then this Slapdash workaround is compatible with any other classic title. It will be cool to see what there is!
