Ubisoft’s upcoming 6v6 shooter XDefiant is doing pretty well in closed beta.according to to the publisher (opens in new tab), has attracted 1 million players so far. It outperformed Modern Warfare 2 on Twitch for a while, but viewership numbers dwindled as the beta progressed. About 12,000 viewers (opens in new tab) as i am writing this.
For some FPS players, the free-to-play XDefiant could be the faster, drab alternative to today’s Call of Duty games they’ve been waiting for. As we observed earlier this week, there is a direct link here to the old CoD. XDefiant is Mark Rubin (opens in new tab)was praised by Robert Bowling, producer of 2000s Modern Warfare, who also recently worked on those games. called XDefiant (opens in new tab) A “sophistication” of what CoD once was.

However, it’s not a purely Call of Duty-like game. There’s a Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch-esque escort mode, and special abilities that not all have analogues of his CoD gadgets. One faction’s ultimate is a flamethrower.
My experience with XDefiant’s closed beta is definitely more sweaty than my usual experience with Modern Warfare 2. There is no skill-based matchmaking in casual XDefiant matches. -20 scrubs. There were some frustrating games where I collapsed from a different angle almost every time I spawned, but I also had some fun streaks of my own.
I’m delving into the colorfulness of XDefiant’s maps. There are goofy tech companies, zoos, and Wild West-themed sets. Especially compared to the war-torn misery of Call of Duty. Otherwise, you won’t be particularly drawn to XDefiant’s cast of Tom Clancy graffiti rebels, but they’ll probably grow, and aspects like the UI will no doubt change after the beta.

We don’t have a release date for XDefiant yet, but we expect it to be released later this year, possibly in “open beta” form.
