Pokemon Scarlet and Violet already feature among the mainline Pokemon entries with at least a few points lower critical ratings. Metascore 77but now that the site has opened reviews to users, many are flooding the page with complaints about the game.
At the time of this writing, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had a user score of 2.9/10 on Metacritic, the lowest of any mainline series, but Sword and Shield wasn’t all that hot either. Here’s a breakdown of user scores for past generations of the site:
- Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – 2.9
- Pokemon Sword and Shield – 4.6
- Pokemon Sun and Moon – 7.6
- Pokemon X/Y-7.5
- Pokemon Black/White – 7.8
- Pokemon Diamond and Pearl – 8.2
- Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire – 8.5
There is a dichotomy in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s complaints. The core game is good and fun, but the experience is completely It was decimated by the game’s bugs and technical shortcomings, which almost all negative user reviews mention.
“There’s no excuse for a Switch game to look this bad. This is a billion dollar company that makes games that look worse than an individual developer.”
“Characters and animations often move at 3 fps like robots, resulting in non-stop clipping, pop-ins, stuttering, pauses between actions, ugly textures, and shaky cameras. Aging Switch hardware. Transformation is the limit, but there are plenty of other games out there that are much better, better looking, and more expansive than this.”
“Unbelievably bad. The engine is so slow, not to mention the frame rate and graphics, that I stopped playing after 10 minutes. Doesn’t play at all…”
“Anyone giving that game more than 5/10 points is honestly lying. This game is the worst running game I’ve played in 20 years. Nintendo released this game legally.” I can’t tell you I didn’t bribe someone to do it, it has a memory leak and it’s running below 20 fps, it crashes, the cam slides through the ground, 10000 technical issues. It’s unplayable from a technical standpoint, I don’t care if it’s going to be the best Pokemon game in terms of gameplay or story, a $60 game from the world’s biggest franchise shouldn’t be released like this It’s been 20 years since I wanted to play an alpha or demo for $60.”
It’s true that user scores can be used to express all sorts of complaints about the game, and it’s often a political battleground around various game controversies, but I’m not sure what’s going on here. I wouldn’t consider it “review bombing”. These are legitimate technical issues with the game being cited, even if they’re doing the old-fashioned 0-score vs. 10-score thing between attackers and defenders.
It’s unclear if Game Freak will be able to fix Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s performance issues over time, but it seems unlikely that they’ll be able to fully convert the game to where it needs to be. The idea is that it takes more time and better technology to make it, and it’s also the most profitable in the history of video games.
