So it seems strange to think that Nintendo will implement a mode in Mario Kart to potentially help the game reach F-ZERO fans. Well, that’s almost what happened on the Mario Kart 64 during the development of the game in the mid 90’s. According to Hideki Konno, Mario Kart 64 once had an “no item” mode, allowing players to focus on driving and take part in “serious races.” However, in the end, the mode was removed from the final game because the player demonstrating the title refrained from choosing the mode.
Sounds like the equivalent of Mario Kart’s “no item” mode Super Smash Bros. It’s a franchise. To be honest, the concept of Mario Kart without red shells, bananas, lightning bolts, etc. sounds a bit miserable to us, so we are grateful that Nintendo has decided to remove it from the game.
Mario Kart 64 can now be played via a switch. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. It’s still a cracking game and has won 8/10 in our review, but at the time of writing, it’s currently behind some other titles on the “Best Mario Kart Game Ever” list.
