red fallis a vampire shooter released this week on Xbox and PC, developed by Arkane Studios. dishonorable and preyIt’s one of Microsoft’s 2023 first-party exclusives and a big release for the company’s Game Pass subscription service. And by most accounts, it sucks.
We’re currently playing the game together for our own impressions, which will be out soon, but in the meantime it’s been a very nice response given the size (and price) of the release. So I thought I’d put together a few impressions and review snippets from outlets who were able to receive the code earlier. red falls release (we obviously didn’t), or updating works in progress under review.
let’s start with game spotreviewed the game and gave it 4/10:
After all, Redfall is a game that should never have been released. A plethora of bugs are interfering with his gameplay loop of exploring the world with his friends, and that loop itself feels undermined by elements that are poorly executed and unsuitable for the implementation team.I can’t pretend to know if I’m Arkane chose Make a loot shooter or was Assigned One of the world’s greatest game studios suddenly lost a tooth.
GamesRadar gave the game 2.5 stars Out of 5:
Redfall ultimately falls short of Arkane’s usual standards. It feels rushed, unfinished, and unsatisfying to play. Singleplayer is thwarted by the squad-based open-world shooter structure, multiplayer is stifled by bizarre decisions, and decent shootouts are marred by an uninspiring mission structure. It’s a confusing game full of contradictions and the results are unsatisfactory.
of IGN Not an ongoing review A positive one, mostly dealing with constant bugs affecting both single and multiplayer modes:
With Redfall arriving at IGN just days before its official release date, there hasn’t been enough time to complete a final review yet. After a few tries, I must admit that I was completely blown away by Redfall’s vanilla missions and lifeless world. bug.
Redfall lacks compellingness on nearly every level, not only in its uninteresting story, but also in its familiar gameplay. Redfall not only feels like a game stuck in the past, but even its performance is disappointing.
euro gamers Initial impressions are actually very optimisticwriter Christian Donlan preferred to reserve final judgment until the game is complete, but thought his anecdote at the end was a pretty good summary of the game’s visuals:
So how is it? I think it’s a technical thing. He leaves that to Digital Foundry, but says the edges (technical term) are a little rough. Sometimes the texture lags behind or doesn’t show at all, so these beautiful trees are always a little too close to give them fiery life, and at some point it’s like a classic immersive painting on the wall The sim’s storytelling graffiti was strangely pixelated. Character models are quiet and strangely lit. I’ll add here, I try to be objective, but this is always wrong. The mottled texture – yes, I’m really trying to say this – gives the town a bit of an impressionist feel, I think. Still, my wife walks into the room while I’m playing, looks at the screen in horror, and goes, “Yes! What happened to Fortnite?”
i shouldn’t be careful all Reviews and impressions works so down! Head over to Metacritic and you’ll find several outlets. Many of which I have literally never heard of, but have given the game a positive score. like we covered thiswho rated 4.5 stars out of 5,say it:
With a rich and beautiful open world, tons of weapons, and a variety of enemies to face off, Redfall will surprise you. Players won’t regret picking up Arkane’s latest masterpiece.
OK. A professional review is enough. Let’s see who paid for the game. If you bought this instead of playing on Game Pass, it would have been the list price of $70. This is an important point to remember here. I have to say Here are some of the top Steam reviews at the time of posting.:
Ignoring performance issues, this game is bad. The AI is pathetic even on the highest difficulty. The controls are clunky. Graphics are average. The world is empty. I don’t understand why these companies think they can charge $70 for unfinished junk. I couldn’t even digest an hour of him in this game.
A very average and unfinished game. Slow performance on PC, full of bugs and glitches.
I’ve heard great things from Arkane, but this is different. I played with two of her friends, who were also refunded. I’ll give it a try tonight with the $10 PC Game Pass instead. But his first hour was clear. This is not his $70 AAA release.
Having played most of yesterday, I’ll end with the last one because it’s actually the closest to my own experience with the game. This plays like a remastered PS3 shooter. It’s an unfinished concept piece, a pitch project that somehow made it to retail.
It’s hard to describe how raw the whole thing feels without playing it yourself. Arkane is the studio behind some of the most important first-person games of the last decade. Seeing this with their name on it… really pisses me off.
anyway! As I said, our own impressions come quickly, so a couple of days of multiplayer madness has our team (not me, I live on the far side of the moon) doing these See if you think differently than the reviews of.
