First note by user pmc64 on Reddit (opens in new tab), Capcom moved the ray tracing graphics option from Resident Evil 2 and 3. A free update last summer added next-gen lighting features to these games and Resident Evil 7. (opens in new tab) We migrated them to DirectX 12 and also added other graphics features such as AMD’s FSR.
I loaded it myself into RE2 and sure enough, there was no ray tracing. AMD FSR is still present, and running the game on older DirectX 11 configurations (without those options) is an opt-in choice via the Steam beta branch. This change appears to correspond to the April 14th update. SteamDB (opens in new tab).
I don’t own any of the other games that were boosted in last year’s next-gen update so I can’t confirm, but according to a commenter on Reddit, RE3 was also affected and that game was also updated on the 14th. Wccftech (opens in new tab) It also suggests that Resident Evil 7 has lost the ray tracing option, but we have not been able to confirm that and the game will not have a corresponding update on April 14th. I checked out the Resident Evil 4 remake just in case, but that game still has ray tracing. accessible.
I hate ray tracing because I have a graphics card under 4 digits—I didn’t think it was worth the performance hit. Still, the change is embarrassing and certainly a source of good old consumer anger. I’ll contact Capcom and update this story if I get a response, but this is a temporary change and likely an error, and the traced ray will return to Raccoon City soon.
