Bravery and Greed is an action-adventure game for Nintendo Switch. It features a cast of fantasy-inspired heroes, hordes of undead villains, and a series of caverns to explore and loot. In short, it’s another roguelike. Yes, there are plenty of roguelikes out there to choose from, and it takes a lot to stand out from the crowd.
The premise is simple. Choose your character and travel through five worlds, looting and looting as much as you can. You can play as various fantasy-based types such as sword-wielding fighters, thieves, and magicians. You can even choose the color of your clothes to help distinguish them from each other in multiplayer mode.
The action takes place inside a cave littered with treasure and enemies. The gameplay feels like a blend of platforming and brawling, with lots of tricky traps and satisfying combat. In retro-style pixel-based graphics with detailed sprites and backgrounds, each area is It looks great. It includes some great settings to customize your experience, such as switching between pixelated and smooth graphics, blood off, and more.
As with any roguelike game, execution is procedurally generated, so you’ll never see the same map twice. I’m not usually a fan of this style of gameplay, but the levels are so large and sprawling that it’s not immediately obvious you’re playing another version of a previous run. It renders fine now. Some randomized dungeon crawlers stumble when areas don’t mesh properly and have to backtrack to find another path. Discovering hidden passages and finding treasure is rewarding and the levels feel well designed.
Enemies are tough and varied, from bony warriors to giant leeches. Fighting your way through hordes of goblins and gargoyles to earn gold and other rewards is extremely satisfying. A boss battle also occurs, and it is a difficult enemy with a sense of accomplishment when defeated. I also like the inclusion of discoverable animal and human companions.
Keeps gold after you die and adds to what’s called a greed meter. The more you earn, the more you unlock for your next adventure. Death is not completely permanent. Yes, you have to reboot after death, but you can reboot from any level you conquer. You can also equip collectible cards that will come in handy during your next run. These affect the amount of gold collected, the amount of damage dealt, or your health. The more treasures you collect, the further you can go.
Bravery and Greed is a fun game to pick up and play in a short amount of time. It’s more fun with friends. In Bravery and Greed he allows 4 players to fight, but I would have liked to see a drop-in, drop-out mechanic. As it stands, everyone must be present at the start of the run. There’s also an online mode, so you don’t have to be physically with your friends. Had a hard time finding a room to play in, but this is a great built-in. It’s a shame because this was a fun mode.
Overall, Bravery and Greed is a great looking roguelike with platforming and brawling elements. The characters are great, the combat is satisfying, and the level length and difficulty are just right to encourage replays.
