Pilot life for me.
Curse of the Sea Rats is a 2D platformer adventure where you play as four cursed rats on a prisoner transport. Your task throughout the game is to defeat enemies on your way to find the pirate witch who turned you into a mouse and save the captain’s son from her, all the while leveling up her abilities and completing small quests to Help people around you.
Set in 1777, Curse of the Sea Rats begins with a ship of cursed prisoners crashing ashore due to chaos. Summon 4 prisoners. He tells them he will release them once he returns with both his son and Flora. Flora also has an amulet half that holds her powers to turn her back into a human. The other half was left on the ship, so if Flora is captured, the rat can return to its original form.
The mechanics of Curse of the Sea Rats are fairly straightforward, and you’ll be shown a how-to tutorial first. This is especially useful in combat. Use the joystick to move around and move up in front of people or objects to manipulate them. B to jump, Y to attack, A to block, X to use special attack. You can also combine different buttons with each other, or combine joysticks to use different movements. The controls feel a bit slow, which unfortunately exacerbates an already frustratingly difficult challenge.
The game has different settings, each with its own environment and enemies. As you go deeper into the map, the enemies get tougher and navigation gets a little hectic, but the game is still fun. Each setting also includes a boss to face off. Bosses are part of Flora’s crew, and each has a fighting method that must be understood in order to defeat it.
Bosses get harder as you play together, but you can also level up and upgrade your weapons and abilities to make them easier to fight. Ability upgrades are earned by defeating enemies to gain mental energy. Then use that energy to pay for upgrades. You can switch between 4 characters and upgrade all of them. However, because the experience is shared, upgrading everyone (which you have to do) requires considerable effort. Enemies also drop gold that can be used to purchase various items in the shop. A blacksmith will appear later in the game and you can talk to them about upgrading your weapons.
Curse of the Sea Rats is an action-packed adventure that is fun to play and explore, making the game very exciting (and very frustrating at times). It will always challenge you and push you forward, so there is never a dull part.
