FIST is the latest addition to the ever-growing list of Metroidvania games. Luckily, there are so many games in this genre that are disappointing, but FIST lands well. Reinventing the formula may offer nothing, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t worth your time.
The biggest problem with FIST is playing it on the Nintendo Switch. Hardware has real limitations, especially when the game stutters to maintain framerate. It also doesn’t look as good on the Nintendo Switch as it does on other consoles. This is understandable when compared to the heavy PS5 and Xbox Series X, but considering the games generally struggle to run, it feels more like a shame than ever.
The plot is very simple, but there is a lot to learn and discover along the way in the incredibly rich world that is presented before the player. Play in a different world. Layton was Mechhi’s pilot during the war, but he has since left that era behind. That is, until he was apparently put back into action. He uses a large metal fist from the aforementioned war to retrieve her kidnapped friends and restore her once and for all.
The story is captivating and the world immerses you in true Metroidvania fashion. Dripping with neon, every backdrop is a rich tapestry to stare at. Anthropomorphic animals and the world they live in.
Outside of the general atmosphere and world presented, the gameplay is also a lot of fun. It actually increases as you collect. FIST is really, really challenging. There were a few occasions where it was a little too much, mostly towards the end.
FIST is a really fun Metroidvania that goes a long way to justify its existence. It would also be great to see a few more sets in this world if the devs have the chance. It’s a long way off.
